Windows 8

Post by edfathead »

I was looking for some tips on performance tweaks & noticed in the "Mega-FAQ" it claims a 30-50% performance improvement with win 8 compared to win 7. May I ask what is behind this improvement? I will haply purchase win 8 if it will help but don't want to if it is a myth. Aslo I do not like the layout of win 8.

I did however follow the recommendation to install onto a SSD drive & that has made a very noticeable improvement.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

I don't know about 50% improvement, but every game I have runs faster on win 8.1.

I hesitate to tell you to upgrade vs buying win 8 already on a new computer. I had a few issues upgrading my old win 7 machine. I eventually figured it out. You can make win 8 look and act just like win 7 if you take just a few minutes...maybe 5...to configure it.

As to what makes it faster...a friend was a project manager on the win 8 core development. He said they took the windows kernal down to the studs and rebuilt it. Windows all the way up to 7 was a hodge podge of old code and technology that was never rebuilt for backward compatibility. MS kept adding layers of code on top of layers of code. That got mostly cleaned up and out.

Not only was that a fast & informative reply but it was also straight to the point & non condescending. You Sir are a sexy Forum poster.

I like the sound of the rebuilt OS, I shall look into doing a full reinstall and post back with my results. (I only play Arma 3 & Command & having them both on Steam makes life much easier now)

Thanks.

Ok... I did it. I have spent most of the afternoon fighting the user interface of Win 8 but I am slowly getting it to a point where it is usable. There is certainly a difference in performance with command (it seems).

I must say the difference from the Old hard drive to SSD (whilst still running win 7) was a bigger noticeable performance boost, But will take every bit I can get. The Win 8 (fresh install) has defiantly helped.

My Specs Now

Win 8.1 Pro (64bit)
i5 3.5g
24gb RAM
GTX 760 2gb (Dual Screen)
Running Command on its own SSD drive

Hope this helps anybody else looking for tweaks. (I miss windows 7)
