The Italian Fleet suffers an early casualty when the select Conte di Cavour by mistake [8|]. Fortunately for the RM she is only damaged.

Attention is then turned to the cruisers and a further three ships are damaged with one aborted.

The French hoped to inflict a loss or two on the Italians and not worry about their own losses - effectively going down in a blaze of glory. It did not quite turn out like that, but the damaged ships will hurt the Italian build program.

In return the French lose 2 cruisers sunk and 5 are aborted.

In Finland the Soviets occupy the last remaining Baltic Coast ports. The coastal battleship Ilmarinen was overrun in Turku, she sailed for Vaasa (joining three CP that were already there). When Vaasa was captured by the Soviet cavalry, the three convoys were able to rebase in Germany, but the Finnish warship was rolled for capture, destruction or get away.

This seems wrong compared to the treatment of the Danish ships in similar circumstance? Why were the convoys not rolled for?

In the Italian Coast the fleet of elderly C-class cruisers find the Italian convoy and have 9 surprise points. They want a surface combat and use 4 points to get the choice and use 4 remaining points to increase the expected losses of the enemy.

Cool. [:)]

I noticed that you have a Gladiator in the sea area as well. And I wonder why it wasn't in the two box along with the cruisers? It would have provided needed air cover if CW had been unlucky with the surprise rolls.

Another observation I make is that before creating a naval task force you spend some time looking at the Naval Combat Chart since this helps you create a task force better suited for the current mission. The last cruiser included in the task force provided very little for this mission so having send seven cruisers instead of eight had achieved the same result to less risk and left you with a cruiser available in port for another mission.

Ships when overrun are rolled for if they are surprised or disorganized. After the first overrun Ilmarinen was disorganized hence the die roll for capture during the second overrun.

But I do wonder why Ilmarinen did not sail for a German port after the first overrun.

It looks to me that the Winter War went quite well for the Soviet Union.

Sorry Orm I am getting myself all confuzed!

So:

Surprise impulse = Roll For
Subsequently = Roll For if disorganised but NOT if organised i.e. in the latter case they can sail for a friendly port.

Why didn't Ilmarinen sail for Germany? Because I'm a twat and didn't think of it (I only did "thought" of it with the convoys because there was no other port at that time [:(]

You got it. [:)]

Edit: Same rule for aircraft except that they get destroyed instead of rolled for.

The Allied turn peter's out. There is little left to move!

The Japanese align Siam - again there is no US Entry penalty...

The German have a choice in France; they can take out the hex northwest of Paris and then go for the capital (risking the turn ending before they get the chance at the later) or they can just go for it - and accept that they will be attacking across river from three of the hexes. They go the capital....

The Italians meanwhile push into the Alps with a view to attacking the French garrison northwest of Nice.

Finally, the Japanese march on Lan Chow....

Of course they should go for Paris. [:)]

Do not forget to use the engineer's special ability to help a unit attack across the river.

Four attacks are announced:

- Paris
- Northwest of Paris
- The Alps
- Lan Chow

For the attack on the capital the French have no reason not to throw in their final aircraft reserve - who knows? they may get lucky.

The odds are +3/-3 so they will need a lot of luck....

Allies throw first.

Round 1

15 - DA The German must abort the front fighter of bomber. They choose the Bf-109.
9 - No Effect

Wow! maybe the luck is with the French! The odds have reduced to +2/-1

Round 2

13 - AC The French clear through the Do-17
15 - DX The D510 is destroyed (Pilot survives)

The odds do not change so the French stick to the task

Round 3

7 - No Effect
13 - DA The French fighter is aborted

The Engineer's stack is not attacking across river - although the program asked me that too? Bug?

This is because the program asks if you want to use the engineer's city attacking benefit.

Engineers provide +1 to the land combat die roll (see 11.16.5) when attacking a 2 or 3 factory stack city.

Here goes:

Lanchow is a 5:1 (Yamamoto's HQ Support worked) no modifiers on the Assault Table....

...The throw is an 8. The Communists are in all sorts of doo-doo here. They lose another 2 units, a division and a warlord, and the 2nd Infantry Army is Shattered - I convert to retreat for obvious reasons....

To the Italians next. Let's see if the French can present Il Duce with a few thousand dead for the peace conference....

The attack is a 3:1 no modifiers on the Assault Table....

....9! The Germans are now getting nervous. Have the Axis used up the good dice luck for this impulse? The French 43rd Garrison is destroyed and Graziani marches west...albeit the Italian army is essentially disorganised for this turn.

To the hex north of Paris, stoutly defended by the 7th Infantry Corps. The odds are 4:1 +1 on the Assault Table (there is only infantry and motorised units in the attack)....

....3(4) the attacker is disorganised but another French unit bites the dust.

That leaves the BIG ONE!

Gay Pareeeee is under attack. It's a 4:1 +2 on the Assault Table (Fractional Odds make it 5:1).....

......7(9). That's it. If the Germans want to create Vichy they can. I convert the Shattered to retreat as there is nowhere for the surviving unit to retreat to....
