Hanoi, Then and Now May 4, 1944

Within 6 days the tactical picture around Hanoi has changed considerably. I captured Hanoi and am moving forces east to continue the attack on the regiment he has in the base.

There are over 1000 AV of follow on troops to take on Haiphong.

Within 4 days a division will be landing in Pakhoi to deal with the Phantom troops northwest of Kwangchowan. I think he has follow on forces if I attacked Kwangchowan with a smaller force but the trap is sprung without incident. Within 10 days armor units should be unloading at this location to attempt to bypass his river position and threaten eastern bases.

Mine sweeping.

I need to bombard Hong Kong and he likely has the base mined. I have about 20 mine sweepers. Would it be best to send in a bunch of smaller groups or group them all in one big herd?

A local minesweeping TF (AMc's) can only have four ships. I am not sure if AMs and DMs can have more if their mission is minesweeping.
I know if DMs in a surface combat mission happen to find mines they will sweep them no matter how big the DM TF.
No idea if it makes a difference to have larger or smaller TFs. I suspect a bunch of smaller ones will be more likely to find the mines and will clear more of them.

I am mostly worried about secondary damage from the fortress at hong kong rather than how fast they can get the mines removed.

Mine sweeping.

I need to bombard Hong Kong and he likely has the base mined. I have about 20 mine sweepers. Would it be best to send in a bunch of smaller groups or group them all in one big herd?

My guess, is a big herd. Don't stick around, steam in and then out to minimize damage from coastal guns. If you send them in a small herd then I fear the guns would be far more effective.

Agree on the mass for absorbing shore battery hits.

BTW, I see some of your xAPs took about 15 hits during the landings. Do you imbed some BBs or CAs with the amphib TF to suppress the shore guns during the landing phase?

LOL!! You see the smallest things :P The base was Ternate and I was dropping a regiment and a battalion to stomp out some rebellious troops way behind the lines. I underestimated the fortress. Normally I would use combat shipping to attract attention.

You want to see waste? I wanted to pull a reverse CAP trap on NJP so I sailed right up to the coast of China. Too bad so many bombers were smart enough to turn tail and run at the sight of 200+ hellcats. I still managed to put quite a dent in the Japanese air force on the turn.

Aircraft Losses May 10, 1944

They look much more impressive in the summary.

Amazing! Your CAP only got 4 Jills, but your AA took care of 14 of them and they scored no hits!
Can't give all the credit to the fighter jocks! [8D]

The flak my carriers right now is between 18 - 19,000 each task force. The battle ship task forces that are going to nuke Hong Kong this turn are between 7800 and 12,000 flak.

Having never played this late into a game I am just trying things against a strong Japanese set up. It was nice to kill all those planes but my ships took quite a few hits and although I got really lucky this time and none of them caused any significant damage, rolling the dice on this type of attack is not very smart. Especially after he has time to prepare for it.

Next shot are 4 battleship bombardment groups into Hong Kong harbor. I want to see what kind of damage that can do. I need to take down his production in the city so I am setting up a long range bomber attack from Manila as well. '

I went back and read a few campaigns from Nemo121 (If anyone has links to older stuff on the forum I would love to see it.) I really admire his strategic level of thinking and targeting. Also, his air mobile combat is something I want to try to practice more.

So overall I am asking myself what am I doing strategically to win this war.

Why are my carriers putzing around in the South China Sea? Well, he recently sacked Wenchow which freed up quite a few troops. I am using the carriers as a denial of area to prevent him from using those for an amphibious assault or for defense of areas in contention. I am also using it as a screening force to allow the deployment of most of my armor into southern china via Pakhoi and Hanoi.

I am going to overstack Malaybay next turn in an attempt to shock attack and win the base, finishing off Mindano. Once that happens it will free up 3 divisions and 6 units of armor. One of these divisions will re-deploy to Babeldaob to finish off that base. I will be adding a carrier TF and also some battleships to bombard from Peliu along with whatever air support I need. Peliu is going to lvl 4 airbase soon. Once the troops are dropped off at Babeldaob I can pull the division from Peliu and re-deploy it where necessary.

The British and Indian troops that have made it to Hanoi will proceed west along the main highway to Changsha. NJP managed to strat move a division into Nanning which was previously unoccupied. He managed to do it in the same turn I airdropped a unit. Kudo's to him for timing.

So, it will be a bit of a fight from here on in. The plan is to develop a base, maybe Pakhoi or Kwangchowan or both or all of them and start working over Liuchow and Wuchow out in the open while having my armor attempt to cross the river somewhere north of Canton. When I have enough troops ready I will invade the city from most places and seal it up and then go after Hong Kong. This is getting a bit ahead though, plans will change depending upon progress.

The next thrust of the campaign will need to go in somewhere around Amoy. The divisions from Mindano and Luzon who are freed up once those sieges are finished will be free to amphibiously attack this area. If I can get some armor into Amoy I think I can go wild up in China. The current plan is to go in between Formosa and mainland Japan with 6-8 bombardment groups and hit all of the coastal cities at once. I may suffer some damage from mines but it will cause mass confusion and plane disablements. Then I land at Amoy and/or Tsinkiang and go from there. NJP doesnt have airfield depth in the area so a shallow attack like this might be really effective along with strategic bombing runs, etc.

An additional part I am working on to deploy rather quickly is more troops to the islands. Iriomote and Miyako-Jima are targets. I am hoping to get some flack units before I go and deploy covered by the carriers. This is not strategic, it just keeps NJP's eyes swiviling on multiple areas and multiple targets and overloads him from the real focus of attacks. It will also shield the southern islands as he takes out his abuse on the new targets.

Right now NJP is using a cruiser force to bombard Batan Island and deny my use of the airfield and he also mined the island. I hope he has ground troops on the way as well but I doubt it as it does not seem to be his style. I have no issue with it, I have paradropped most of a regiment onto the island and will happily accept the punishment as it is not relevant to my overall plans.

Finally, a large task force of APA's are within days of Pearl Harbor. I am afraid many of them will go in for a 2 week refit but you can never have too much flak. Once these ships are ready they will sail to Seattle to start moving the final troops for the invasion of the Kurile Islands.

Manila and Luzon. My opponent has chosen to not improve almost anything across the board in this game. So, Manila had an airfield of level 3 and a port of level 5 I think. What a difference a few weeks makes... The airfield went to level 8 yesterday and is already in double digits toward level 9. I shut down the port construction to speed up the airfield. The Avation support is nearly 1000 now that the airfield reached level 8.

I put almost every construction unit I have on Manila (and there are a lot of them :]) into strat mode to move north. I plan to build up Laoang, Aparri and Tuguegaro to level 8 airfields which I will use to pound Formosa into dust. Well, at least that is the plan.

Longer term once I capture the coast up to at least Foochow if not Wenchow then take down Formosa. Meanwhile try to take out or at least isolate Shanghai and Nanking. At that point my focus will likely be the home islands via Moppo or some area around there depending upon progress on the eastern front.

Everything is flexible and changing. I will keep doing what works and stop doing what hurts :]
