I will ask him to go slow, or at the very least to go slow enought to guarantee there is not auto-victory early on.

So, you are playing a game where you are asking the Japanese to not try to win?

I might have a problem with that as your opponent but if he doesnt care then it is all good ;]

I think it goes back to self restrain, I would not, for example, use my 4E bombers to flatten out his bases using overwhelming 400+ bombers in night attacks, knowing that his first night figher (a weak underperforming one) comes in mid 44. We have HR in place to eliminate that ahistorical factor. Moreover, we have HRs that reduces strategic bombing to "manpower" only, and this is, again, to model the fact that strategic bombing was not effective until they started fire bombing the cities.
But you are right, I think I will never ask that... the problem is that my HR on China was that very vague, but it is still there. I think I won't be asking anything, as my Yamato spirit and my Bullshido warrior code dictates no compromise, and no negotiations!!!
The way I see it, as long as he doesn't put his main focus on China, I am fine... and I am still making some (small) effort on trying to make sense of the mess that is Allied China

My expectations: once the SRA is conquered, I want him to put his main effort in either: India, Australia, the Pacific, but not China.
I don't like China, thus I don't put a lot of time into it. Moreover, when you read othe AARs, you see that even those more experienced, smarter, better players etc than I am, devoting a lot of effort into China, cannot under the current situation stop the inevitable "Blitz" if the Japanese player wants to push there.
Some of the issues are: lack of supplies, very bad starting position, overpowered and surprisingly mobile siege guns, lack of AT, lack of starting forts, just to mention a few. Some very creative players have counters to these strategies, but basically these counters mean devoting all the Allied effort into salvaging China... which was less than a secondary theater at most in the real war. So no fun or historical, in my opinion.

I read there was some scenario development on China that might make it more interesting (gnarly roads?) but that is talking the future, and not the current game with PresterJohn.

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 0

This might be stupid question - but in past wasnt it necessary to achieve 2:1 odds to reduce forts? And with 1:1 odds forts stay untouched? (unless combat eng reduced it)

Or my memory doesnt serve me well?

I think and this is also memory, if he had engineers in the attack, and he did have them! then they will reduce forts regardless of the odds

But there was a note "Japanase enginners reducing fort level to 0" or something like that.

I played intensively in 2005-2007 and i think it has been changed - could anybody confirm?

In my PBEM as defender i relied that 1:1 wont be enought to reduce forts and i was surprised as hell.

Maybe it only mentions engineers if there is a Combat Engineer unit in the assault? Most larger infantry units include some combat engineers so they could still reduce forts without a CE unit.

Yes, there were certainly some engineers, you can see the 16th Eng Regiment there

plus all the big units (like the 4th Div) would have some engineers in their TOE.

Q:
How bad are the overstacking penalties? I have Clark at full capacity... every Manila's withdrawing unit will go to Clark... so it can potentially go double (40,000 max: 70K to 80K depending how many units die)
Should I start moving troops from Clark to Bataan to avoid the overstack?
Should I send a Banzai attack to reduce my #s?

In reply to an earlier question, I have found in my games that LCU attacks can drop the forts AFTER getting 1:1 odds. This happened to me in China and allowed the Chinese to capture Ichang early on in the game. If enough combat engineers come into play they might actually drop forts prior to odds calculation (and possibly knocking your fort level down 2 levels).

I'm not clear about the stacking limit penalties but would like to know as I'm currently playing a DBB-B with SLs...over to the experts.

I've seen forts dropped at odds worse than 1 to 1, but I don't have a handle on the critical factor.

Ship losses - Dec 30th 1941

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

We have almost reached the end of the year; so this is a good time to do a tally of ship losses:

Image

Capital ships:
No capital ship lost [:)]
I have 3 heavily damaged BBs:
Maryland safe at PH
PoW and Repulse somewhere in the Indian ocean moving towards Cape Town. They are not safe, but their chances are good
BBs West Virginia and Nevada with moderate damage, I think I will try to fully repair them at PH. It should take 4 to 5 months to do so

Cruisers:
CA Houston and CA Cornwall are serious losses, they will be missed
I am not too concerned with the loss of CL Java, CL Tromp, CL Adelaide and CL Dauntless as these are obsolete WW1 era cruisers. I have plenty of them.
CA Mauritius is at high risk, getting emergency repairs very close to the front (Soerabaja)
Many more cruisers under repair, but not under serious risk

Destroyers:
I lost Phelps to a submarine torpedo and Electra and Jupiter in last turn's raiding foray.
DD John D. Ford will be lost as soon as Manila falls. (in the next couple turns).
I have several damaged DDs, worst being Witte de With getting repaired at Sorerabaja. Good thing DDs repair quickly

Japan lost at least 8 DDs:
4 Fubukis on the battle of Mersing: DD Fubuki, DD Shinonome, DD Usugumo, DD Shirakumo
1 more Fubuki hit a mine at Mersing: DD Shirayuki???
1 Minekaze torpedoed near Balikpapan: DD Nokaze
1 Shikinami at the battle of Jesselton: DD Ushio
1 Momi at the battle of Jesselton: DD Yomogi

Submarines:
9 sunk, as direct consequence of Manila's Dec 7th raid
1 torpedoed by a Japanese submarine
Plus Argonaut was severely damaged by hitting a mine at Kwajalein
I have another 12 moderately damaged submarines, these all due to Manila's raid. Most are moving to Australia to get fully repaired, the worst damaged are in Soerabaja having emergency repairs performed

Jan 1st: Ambon invasion

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

January 1st, 1942: the new year came with the invasion of Ambon.

this is done before invading: Makassar, Kendari, Tarakan, Balikpapan and Java.
Which means he want to cut my retreat line to Darwin and/ go for North Australia early

I am just running away, as my cruisers already tasted the kind of beating those Vals/ Kates can provide

Jan 3rd: Singapore assault and big mistake at Clark

a) Japan shock assaulted Singapore
b) Japan's first serious attempt to bomb (port strike) Singapore
c) Horrendous mistake at Clark Field

a) Singapore's shock assault: PresterJohn decided to cross with multiple LCUs. Results were just OK, not crippling to Japan
I don't think he brought enough troops to overwhelm it.... yet. I feel confident I can hold it for many days

Tough break at Clark - what's the status of Bataan as fallback? Fort/Supplies?

With Singers on the bring and the PI almost under the boot, you'll likely be facing 4-5 freed up divisions by Feb. Any SIGNINT hits of where he may be going?
