allied CV replacement rules
I cant seem to remember if the rule for automatic replacement of lost Allied CVs is still around and if so what the cutoff date was? For some reason I cant find it in the manual. ( hence my thoughts that maybe it went way with AE )
RE: allied CV replacement rules
It is now a scenario option, and I don't know of any that have it set to respawn.
RE: allied CV replacement rules
In AE, the former 'respawn' ships are part of the at-start reinforcement queue, for example 'Yorktown II' & 'Hornet II'. You can even rename them while they're in the queue, if you prefer.

That is not a true statement.
RE: allied CV replacement rules
Uh, yes it is. If you wish to select re-spawn , you need to select it via the editor. And I ALWAYS re-name CV's , as I have no need for a WASP and a WASP2.ORIGINAL: EHansen

What AW1Steve said.
If you never lose the originals the replacements are a bonus. You get them no matter what.

RE: allied CV replacement rules
Those are not respawned ships. If you lose a CV, you will NOT get another if respawn is not checked in the scenario file.
The ones you are talking about were ships that were renamed during building for ships lost in the war.

How do you rename CVs in the queue?

RE: allied CV replacement rules
Information => Ship Availability. Find Yorktown II in the queue and click on it. Its name is yellow. Click on the name to rename. Most ships in the queue cannot be renamed. Yorktown II can be.
RE: allied CV replacement rules
During development, the team wanted to move from the respawning to something more historically accurate. The ships that were "respawned" in the real world were ships that would have been built anyway, they were just renamed to honor the lost ship. The respawn mechanism was left in the game for anyone who wanted to enable it in a mod, but it is not used in any of the official scenarios.
There was a debate about whether to name the ships the way they really were in the war, or whether to name them the names they would have had if the first ship hadn't been sunk. The renaming in the queue was the compromise. The ships are named the way they were in the war because fewer people know that CV-12 was originally the Kearsarge than people who know there were two USS Hornets in the war.
The original spawning mechanism unfairly penalized Allied players who don't suffer the losses the US (and Australia) historically suffered. And rewards them with more ships than US industry could build if the lose more ships than historical.
From what I read Gary Grigsby defended the spawning mechanism claiming American industry could have just expanded capacity to squeeze in more carriers if needed. This was not true, US capital shipyards were at 100% capacity for the entire war. Two Iowas were launched incomplete and never finished to make room for more Essexes. (I have never had any contact with Gary Grisby or anyone at 2X3 so this is just based on a story I heard.)
The respawn mechanism actually shorted the US player some Fletcher class destroyers that were named for sunk destroyers. Those ships are in AE, though Japanese players probably don't want to hear that.

Thanks guys. For some stupid reason it was bugging me that I was about to have 2 yorktowns and no Enterprises.
RE: allied CV replacement rules
When I played PBEM with Cuttlefish of WITP AAR fame, I renamed one of my carriers the CV "Hibiki" [:D] I figured he wouldn't dare try to sink that one!

Are those ship slots (like 3021 for York II) with the ability to be renamed hardcoded? Examining the editor and the files, I don't see anything that allows for that feature to be enabled by modders ...

I like to use "Reprisal", since that was one which wasn't finished. I'll go that route if I haven't taken much for CV losses.

Apparently not "hardcoded" but use of roman numerals aka II, III, IV in the editor makes the name yellow and able to subsequently be renamed ingame from the ship availability queue. See post #5 from this thread.

This is exactly how it was. For another piece of trivia, there is one CV that had two names of a sort. The US at the time put the name of a ship in the keel. Well one which had its keel named was subsequently renamed for a lost CV. Don't recall which it was.

There was a number of CVs renamed during construction. The list is readily available if you go looking.
(Several contributors to this forum will be able to give you the list off the top of their head). [:D]

Yes, I know this. What I was trying to point out is that I read of one that has two names. Not officially of course. One particular ship was far enough into construction to already have its keel imprinted with its original name. IOW it was renamed after being laid down. AFAIK its the only vessel that was. The others were all renamed before the keel was laid.

I know that's the case with CV-12 Hornet/Kearsarge. Some of the others may have had a different name on the keel too.
