Fantastic AAR, AlexGGGG! Thanks for taking the time.

I am glad you had better responsiveness to the mission, but it still seems that my scenario is a little vanilla. It surprises me that the Soviet subs were caught on the surface - I don't understand why they were doing that.

I am currently working on Rev F to make the Soviet SAG more aggressive and to add ammo bunker stores. With the limits on supplies, maybe the challenge will be enhanced. I will also run a test on the Benghazi landing to see why it is not functioning.

Thanks for doing this - I took notes for my new scenario that I am working on, Cauldron.

Okay - fixed the Benghazi issue. Not sure why, but it did not have a trigger in the Event. Don't understand how it allowed me to create the event without a trigger. Oh well, it is corrected in Rev F.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Alright, here is the final iteration of this scenario.

Rev F Change Log:
• added ammunition to enemy and allied bunkers, so game can now be played without setting to Unlimited Ammo
• changed Soviet SAG ROE so that its posture should be more aggressive towards opportunity targets
• fixed the Benghazi landing event
• repositioned enemy land units for better cover

I have deleted all scenario attachments from this thread.

This scenario has gone through multiple revisions and the final one is Rev G - there will not be anymore updates on my part.

Revision G Change log
• added munitions to the two Tarawa-class carriers
• updated the Nimitz ammunition stores

Hey djoos5, is the scenario really supposed to be only 24 hours long? I think it was 2.5 days in earlier versions?? Now I'm not sure if there is physically enough time to get to your objectives.

Hey AndrewJ,

The game should start with 2d12H to achieve the goals, with a start date and time of March 12,1990 at ZULU 10:00AM LOCAL 11:00AM

I have attached the file here just in case you have a corrupted one.

Thanks djoos5. Turns out the trouble was on my end, and I can work around it.

Now all I have to do is work around the clouds of Badgers and Backfires and Bears (oh my!) [X(]

RE: AAR Med Conflict 1990 Rev G

Post by Maromak »

Hi all,

I've just finished Rev G with 1d 1hr remaining. Score was Triumph: 980.

Overall comments for djoos5 - Well done, you've successfully turned this into a great scenario with a good level of challenge and consistent activity from start to finish. I think the force and weapon stores balance is very good. I don't have any suggestion for improvement other than the enemy tanker support patrol could possibly be moved as it was very vulnerable to F-14s and allied fighters.

This is a log of whatever notes I made as I played along. All in all, this rev E is much more challenging than original one, and much more enjoyable to play.

I think my initial setup was similar to AlexGGGGGG's.

I set up two F-14 patrols to the east and south of the CVBG plus tanker, AWACS, fixed wing ASW, and jammer missions.

First time around I expended all my A2A munitions but this time I sent TLAMs to take out all the runway access points at Dubrovnik. Three TLAMs each was enough. I also took out the runway access points at Tripoli.

After cleaning up a few MiGs from Tripoli, I deleted the southern F-14 patrol.

Next I launched most of the A-6s and F/A-18s to bomb Tripoli and re-armed them with HARMs and Harpoons after they returned.

Enemy radars in Libya were also destroyed either by aircraft or additional TLAMs.

Throughout most of the mission, I destroyed Backfires, Tu-16s, Tu-95s, and Bisons in two and threes as they flew in from the Black Sea. I was sure to destroy these aircraft well before they had radar coverage of my formations.

I had a few issues with refuelling and these have been reported elsewhere. This cause the loss of one F-14. The other losses were due to enemy fire including an SSN equipped with MANPADs (S-3s)

The Soviet SAG was relatively easy to destroy once it was within range of the F/A-18s. Two waves of F/A-18s hit their ships initial with Walleyes (as the were ready at the time) followed by a second wave of Harpoons. Both waves were preceded by EA-6Bs for jamming.

As others have mentioned, a few enemy subs surfaced and began transmitting and they were destroyed shortly afterwards.

Again- Well done![&o]

Hey Maromak,

Thanks for running my scenario again and for the great AAR! I gotta say, based on the performance of the enemy, it would seem that they did not put up much of a threat at all. [:D]

Glad you enjoyed it the second time around.

Subs most likely surface when they have to recharge (diesels), and they have EMCON set to Radars = Active. In their missions, one can probably adjust EMCON so they have radars passive and they will be harder to detect.

djoos5

this is a great scenario.... the best ive played possibly.... really challenging.....
my game is going different than Maromaks... for sure..... i am like 5-6 hours of game time in and need more AAW ammo... cant finnish it like this... think ill start over... and manage my air assets differently... i thought i was doing good... but now im overwhelmed... have achieved triumph... but dont know if i can complete the mission without more air to air missiles...

there were some surprises for me... although i thought i completely sanitized the straights of Sicily... i went to flank with my cv group to be ahead to cover my assault group... which is where they should have been in the beginning.... and my belknap ran into a akula that must have been parked there... it managed to get 5 torpedoes off before being destroyed... it caused chaos and i was surprised nothing was hit... the other two were up against the coast of Sicily which i thought was odd.. only one went to 33 ft... maybe was shallow there..?
the su27s boiling out of Albania were a real hassle and caused me to loose some f14 to them and a lot of missiles....
the three pronged red force bomber attack was brilliant.. as i thought i was over the hump and it totally stretched the air resources i had assigned and ammo for aaw work... you did good on timing some of these events for sure...
when i made my first sead run on Tripoli.. no red aircraft came up to meet me... so i thought i had attrited them out.... so i didnt destroy the air base... that was a mistake..... because it seams they have an endless amount of aircraft....i have destroyed a 130 or so red aircraft.. but thats obviously not enough.....

the way the allied ai acted was awful.... they hogged my tankers and flew half way off station across the med to use my fuel up and screwed my rotations.... and their p3s instead of doing patrols in the east flew to libya looking for a stupid kilo and got shot down... instead of targeting the red surface group for a strike... they should have had a prosecution areas in the east and refuel should be turned off for the allied air assets.... or the should have their own tankers... the f104s just zigzaged around doing almost nothing.... but try to prosecute targets on afterburn then turn around half way to target to rtb or refuel....
i would like to have control of the allied forces... that would be useful.....

but again... i love this scenario and am going to start over...

if i can go into the editor and take control of all blue forces i will... never have done that before...

thank you djoo... really fun.....

Aaaand again. This is a great scenario now with a few added surprises.

Without giving away too many surprises, new players will need to choose their battles to conserve A2A ammo and aircraft. Another tip - I sailed my SAG and CVBG further south than in previous versions of this scenario.

Maromak......

I don't get how you lost only 2 US aircraft...? The su27 were hurting me.... Did you do a tomahawk strike on the Albanian airbase...? I contemplated doing that…

Hi. Yes I initially tried to smash the Albanian base as I had done successfully in earlier versions of the scenario. I basically used all my Tomahawks and barely scratched the base (runways) so I figured the scenario designer intended the airbase to survive no matter what. So I restarted the scenario and sailed my SAG and CAG virtually due south to extend the range between my fleet and the threat including the Tu-95 with their long range radar. In order to accomplish the mission objectives, there is no requirement to splash every Su-27 so I avoided contact with them as much as possible. Instead I focused on killing anything with a long range air to surface radar which could detect my ships. I also used a Jammer mission in between my fleet and the main threat as further protection.

One or two waves of SSM carrying Tu-22s did launch on my fleet after my fleet was detected. The Tu-22s and SSMs were downed with a mixture of fighter aircraft and ship launched SAMs.

From memory the AV-8 was downed by an SA-5C based in Libya and the F-14A ran out of fuel.

I may try that the next time..... For fun I helped preserve the Greeks and Italians... I'm going to use them... and they are allies...
