RE: Jan 3rd: Singapore assault and big mistake at Clark

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Tough break at Clark - what's the status of Bataan as fallback? Fort/Supplies?

With Singers on the bring and the PI almost under the boot, you'll likely be facing 4-5 freed up divisions by Feb. Any SIGNINT hits of where he may be going?

Bataan
supplies at 23,189
Fort 2.53
Stacking limits: 13,341 / 45,000
Troops: 900 infantry, 8120 second line

Clark
supplies at 13,580 (I will push them to Bataan)
Fort 2.79
Stacking limits: 51,283/40,000 ----> This after my "wise" [8|] deliberate attack; it was worst before. The overstacking is due to Manila's retreating troops
Troops: 9,221 infantry, 33,665 second line
I am moving the best troops out to Bataan, this to reduce overstack. they did not assaulted last turn, so they are in good shape.

No SigInt, but some observations:
- He just assaulted Tulagi and Stewart island: an early invasion to Luganville/ New Caledonia is likely

- Very early on, he assaulted Amchitka in the Aleutians. This I believe is a bluff, as I have Cats and submarines patroling and they have not seen any reinforcement

- Other than an early para drop on Pt Blair, nothing is happening on Burma; I still own Tavoy, Mergui, etc. From time to time I bomb Rahaeng and Chiang Mai... nothing there. Andaman sea completely open, which meant I am still able to pump supply to China and do some LCU withdrawals
I believe he will focus on a fully naval campaign to capture Rangoon, this of course once Singapore is open.

Burma situation

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

As mentioned before, other than a para drop on Pt. Blair, Japan has not yet done anything worth mentioning in the Burma/ Thai frontier.
The Andaman sea is still completely open, as I regularly send cargo and transport ships to Rangoon

This has allowed me to:
- send supply to Rangoon: I have 5,681 on Lashio and 10,600 on Rangoon... I know it is not a lot, but this will hopefully keep growing

- Do a 2nd Dunkirk at Rangoon. I pretty much took out the most valuable LCUs out of Burma into Chittagong, to be distributed later on to what is now called Bangladesh... This is the place I will be defending.
I will keep token forces in Burma to work as speed bumps. but definitively, I won't be fighting there

So, why not defend Burma? In the last month or so, my opponent has simply overwhelmed with superior forces anywhere he wanted to.. Piece meal defenses don't work. And once he gets Rangoon, then the entire Burma will fail like dominoes.
Moreover, his faster troops could then persecute and destroy all the leftovers.

Fighting in Bangladesh, on the other hand, means fighting on rails, I can reinforce or withdraw if needed, and maintain all troops well supplied from the many ports on west India.

Did I made a big mistake??

Good rationale for fighting outside Burma where you have internal LOC. Two things that restrict this strategy a bit:

1. It can take up to four days for troops to change to strat mode and move - three to pack and one to exit the hex. That means if you intend to evacuate on the rails before a superior enemy force arrives, you must start packing early, and will be vulnerable to bombing while packing.
And if he gets into the hex before you leave, you cannot use strat mode to depart and have to switch back to move or combat mode, all the while vulnerable to a ground attack.

2. You must place garrisons at every rail base within his drop range to guard against paratroops cutting your LOC.

I think the key to #1 is recon/naval search everywhere he might be approaching from so you have time to move troops. And if you decide early on which units must fight to the death in place, you will not be tempted to move them when trouble appears.

Reinforcement units can be kept in strat mode ready to move.

If you do not have enough units to do #2 precaution, you can have your own paratroops standing by to counter-drop, keeping in mind he will fly in reinforcements as soon as his paras take a base.

would you defend Akyab and Cox's Bazaar?
I want to center my defenses into Calcutta, Chittagong and Dhaka. But I don't know if I should leave the former 2 empty/ ready to grab

Another point is, he miscalculated Singapore, he is nowhere near successfuly assaulting it; thus, I will have time to keep reinforcing

Great to still have Singers! Mostly they need supply so keep sending small convoys of expendable ships there, and subs too if you can afford the drop in ops elsewhere.

Personally, I would not try to defend Akyab and Cox's Bazaar because they are too isolated and easy to bombard/take from the sea.
Chittagong is worth fighting for, but can also be bombarded. Build forts as high as you can there to reduce the effects.
Expect lots of bombers and fighters. Keep your aircraft away from coastal hexes where they can be bombarded from the sea. Make him come to you with bombers and fighters, and have lots of AA and your own fighters waiting.

Don't waste troops on places like Dacca which are spur lines from the railroads. If he takes Dacca you can send a ground unit to clear it as it is worthless until he can base lots of aircraft there.

Keep your area HQs back from the front lines, but within their 5 hex range. Move India HQ (9 hex range) to Ranchi so it can support Calcutta and many of the interior bases.

Although Kohima and Imphal are not on the railroad, they have a good first-class road and many British units can strat move on it. Move by rail to the start of the road, then set a new destination along the road. Or in reverse, take road to the railhead then set a new destination on the rail lines.

India will need reinforcement if he does decide to invade in strength. Get American and Australian units lined up to go there. Some keep them at Cape Town until they know whether India or Oz will be the second wave objective.'
I prefer to get them on-map to Bombay since they can usually move down the IO to Oz if needed, and will be in good position if India is the target.

Sorry for the confusion, no troops on Dacca, only AA, Base Forces and airgroups; Dacca is a L4 airbase that cannot be naval bombarded... thus it has its uses.
Certainly I won't be putting any line of defense there; as soon as I see risk, I will rebase the planes and strat move the AAs and Base Forces
Chittagong is at airbase L2. I will build it ut to L3
fort level 2.65 I hope to build it to L4 by the time Japan comes knocking the door

I have the following LCUs on the East Coast:
27 Div --> Target Calcutta
41 Div --> Target Perth
108 Reg --> Target Trincomalee
160 Reg --> Target Diego Garcia
185 Reg --> Target Colombo
I am not even near the PP requirements to buy them. Moreover I don't want to buy one for India and then he focuses on Australia. So I have the Queen Elizabeth parked on the East Coast, I will move more fast transports there; so depending on how things evolve, I will start buying them and rushing to their target.
For PP, I am giving priority to the construction/ BF, AA and Hawaiian regiments as I want to reinforce Suva ASAP.

Jan 4th: Boise is lost

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

January 4th highlights are:

- Another intense, bloody bombing on Singapore. Cruisers Ceres and Caledon got multiple bombs (but they didn't sink), but at the cost of around 10 2E bombers.
I hope he keeps bombing Singapore. Although I already rebase all fighters; AA is very strong.
I am more than willing to lose 2 or 3 cruisers if each brings down multiple bombers

Then disaster [:(]

I was trying to sneak 2 TFs (each around 10 to 12 ship strong, with 2 or 3 cruisers leading) into the Ceram sea. I set them to go east of Boela, close to Babo.
I knew the location of KB-1 on the Banda sea, but I thought it was moving west, and the path chosen was going to be outide his range.

Well, I miscalculated: CL Boise sunk, CA Exeter heavily damaged [8|]

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Gorong at 81,111

Weather in hex: Severe storms

Raid spotted at 13 NM, estimated altitude 5,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 37
B5N2 Kate x 27

Allied aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N2 Kate: 5 damaged
B5N2 Kate: 1 destroyed by flak

Allied aircraft losses
SOC-1 Seagull: 4 destroyed

Allied Ships
CL Boise, Bomb hits 4, and is sunk
CA Pensacola, Bomb hits 1
DD John D. Edwards, Bomb hits 1
DD Alden

Aircraft Attacking:
25 x B5N2 Kate bombing from 1000 feet
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb

Magazine explodes on CL Boise

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Boela at 82,110

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 65 NM, estimated altitude 3,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 27 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 9
B5N2 Kate x 25

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N2 Kate: 13 damaged
B5N2 Kate: 3 destroyed by flak

Allied Ships
CA Exeter, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
CL Marblehead, Bomb hits 1
CL De Ruyter

Aircraft Attacking:
24 x B5N2 Kate bombing from 1000 feet *
Naval Attack: 2 x 250 kg SAP Bomb

What's next?
- One TF with damaged ships + escorts will run away on direction SE... Likely Prester John will persecute
- Dutch TF, reinforced with Marblehead and some Clemsons, will go north, hoping to cause some trouble.
- 1 cruiser and 1 Destroyer, recently repaired on Soerabaja, will go to the Makassar strait, again, to find trouble and/ or delay invasions

It is painful and I am still mourning its loss

But this next turn, I was able to get some small revenge; in my last thread, I mentioned I sent 1 cruiser and 1 destroyer to the Makassar strait to see if it could catch a Japanese TF.
It did! although troops had already disembarked

RE: Jan 6th: sunk my first submarine

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

All quiet in Singapore:
after 3 days of horrible aircraft losses, he stopped "port strike" bombing it. Assuming bombing does not resume:
Lightly damaged CL Enterprise will be fully repaired in few days
Seriously damaged CL Caledon and CL Ceres will need to go to Colombo as soon as he starts assaulting Singapore; they might sink as damage is severe.

KB-1 is near Darwin.. as he was expecting my damaged cruisers to run away here.
He found and sunk (only) small fish:

Jan 8th: raid at the Gilberts (Nonouti)

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Jan 7th and 8th had been very quiet turns;

- PresterJohn has not yet assaulted Singapore or Clark, he is only ART bombing them. Fort level keep growing, slowly
- He has been focused on small invasions, painting the map "red" with uncontested assaults on dot or empty bases
- One of this small invasion fleets got destroyed on Nonouti (Gilbert's island)

I sent CL Detroit, CL Concord + 13 destroyers to investigate the Gilbert's invasions. It might had been overkill; but I didn't know (and still don't know) what kind of opposition to expect there:
I bet KB-2 is rushing there... I give it at least two turns to arrive,

Image

Day Time Surface Combat, near Nonouti at 136,133, Range 19,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
PB Nagata Maru, Shell hits 34, and is sunk
xAK Tenyo Maru, Shell hits 40, and is sunk
xAK Kamikaze Maru, Shell hits 31, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

Allied Ships
CL Concord
CL Detroit
DD Dunlap
DD Smith
DD Preston
DD Drayton
DD Conyngham
DD Shaw
DD Cushing
DD Perkins
DD Flusser
DD Downes
DD Cassin
DD Reid
DD Tucker

For next turn, I have divided it into 2 TFs: one will inspect Tarawa, the other Ocean island

I hate "engire room open to sea"

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

I had been very busy at work, so although I had kept a daily turn rate with Steve, I did not have the time to update this AAR

Besides, not a lot had happened, I will do a full update this weekend.

Highlights:
- Singapore, Ambon, Clark still hold but we are getting close to the end
- He just landed in Tarakan, Buna and Kendari... so they too are going to fall soon
- Quiet at sea, most of my raiders are getting repaired
- Subwar: minimal on both sides, from time to time we have the ocassional torpedo attack, but nothing interesting to report

- Repulse: As you might remember, it got torpedoed on Dec 21st. For the last twenty-something turns, I had tried to salvage it. I sent it to Cocos with an AR, then get fuel, escorts etc.
Everything was kind of OK, until it got off map (to CapeTown):
In turn 31 I got a flooding message, but it kept repairing it. Moreover it was already close (7 days) to CT.
Then.... [:(]
last turn, I got "engine room open to sea"... As you can see on the picture.. results are horrendous [&:][:@][:@][:@] I HATE THIS RIDICULOUS TIME VAMPIRE OF A GAME!!! [:D][:D]
where did I hear that before?
Image

Well, Repulse is finished. the 7 days to reach CT became 27 days at 3kts... I am sure it will sink on day 26!

Your opponent isn't wasting any time is he? Paras into Java....I'll have to remember that!

Is there really any way to defend Java without massive Allied reinforcement?
