I see that the Chinese Communists were at risk of being encircled near Chengchow. Did they extricate themselves?

No, not really - I was taken by surprise how quickly the Japanese units were able to bear down on my forces.

I have therefore taken what I think is the best option to try and extricate at least some of the units - but it does not look good for either the Communists or the Nationalists at the moment.

Here is a picture I managed to obtain of the Fleet Air Arm's daring raid on Fredrikshaven. For a relatively small port, containing a handful of merchant ships, the Germans appear to have put up a ton of flak! [X(]

Germany declare war on Netherlands.

Germany and Japan select a land impulse.

Germany makes a port strike on Rotterdam but the surprise die roll is only a one and one cruiser is damaged. Not the result the German high command expected. [:(]

No naval air.

Italy transport a infantry to Sardinia.

Germany, once again, bomb Metz. And once again Germany rolls a one so the mission is a failure.

Japan make one ground strike but now a 9 is rolled so that mission is a failure as well.

Japan rail HQI Umezu from the central front in China to the North. I also rail a militia to the north front.

The race towards Sian continues. Meanwhile Germany launch a automatic attack against Amsterdam.

Pardon me for interjecting with a newbish question. I've read the Initiative Rules in the RAC multiple times, and I still don't understand the significance of one side going first and last in the same turn. RAC 6.2 says: "However, you might let the other side go first if you want to move the initiative setting to your advantage; if they go first and last in the turn, it improves for you." What does "improves for you" mean?

If you move first and last in a turn then the initiative track moves 1 in your opponents favour.

It means that the marker on the initiative track move one step towards your side.

If Axis (me), had begun the last impulse and ended it as well then the initiative marker would have moved from 'Axis +2' to 'Axis +1'.

Please keep the questions coming. [:)]

The initiative marker is on a track with spaces for +2 Axis, +1 Axis, 0, +1 Allied, +2 Allied. These modify the die roll. accordingly. Also if you have a + or if it is in the 0 box, you can demand a re-roll of the Initiative die roll, at the price of moving it one space in your opponent's favor.

If the turn ends after an impulse for the side that moved first, the initiative marker is moved one space away from that side.

Having the initiative allows you to to decide who moves first, and you can declare that the other side moves first, as Orm did in this game. This makes it impossible for the marker to move away from you at the end of the turn. This can be a good idea in the winter turns, to conserve your best chance at having the initiative in the longer summer turns. However it comes at a risk that you might only get as few as a single impulse for the whole turn, when the weather is exceptionally bad (moving at 3 boxes for each impulse on the track that determines the die roll to end the turn).
