Artillery Support

Post by Jgolch »

Please, please forgive me if this question has already been addressed. What does it mean in the plan an attack screen when an artillery unit has an "X" across it? I just can not seem to find this information on my own.

It means it's not available to select to support the attack. If you set the unit to tactical reserve, it'll become available in this area, and may support passively if not assigned directly.
"What did you read at university?"
"War Studies"
"War? Huh. What is it good for?"
"Absolutely nothing."

Perhaps a better description would be that it is in range but not in a support deployment.

Perhaps a better description would be that it is in range but not in a support deployment.

Perhaps I should clarify that that only applies to artillery/air units in the artillery pane. Ground units in the six attack panes with the red X can't join the attack at all - unless they are ranged.

Note that this was a new 3.4 feature and that is why it can't be found in the manual. But it was listed in the Whatsnew.doc, under 3.4 section IX, item 28.

Also be advised - artillery and air support units in the attack screen can be selected to participate in that attack by left clicking on them - the X goes away and the selected unit moves to the last position......

Grognard, are you saying that an X out artillery unit will participate in an attack by selecting it? I would assume this means it would be dedicated to this attack only as is the case whenever you select a support unit in the attack pane.
