convoys become un sentried

Post by herbertx »

Not a bug but a definite problem. Playing the Global War scenario solitaire. With the Commonwealth and America especially because they have most of the convoy action, I find my convoys through some unknown mechanism becoming un-sentried all the bloody time. The problem is I find out they've become un-sentried in the Return to Base step where it is impossible to re-sentry them. So I'm forced to return them to base. It seems to happen in sea areas where ships are moved into or thru. I have not checked the box in the Production Planning form for "returning all unused convoys to base", so that is not the problem. Not sure what is happening. Has anyone else noticed this behavior? What could be going on?

Weird. I must say I don't think I've ever experienced that problem. I put a CONV to sea and the program always seems to put them on sentry - i.e. I never have to do anything with them unless I need to return them to port.

Sorry that cannot be more helpful [&:]

I have definitely encountered the problem. What one has to do is, during the return to base step, have the global map open, with the view set to "Allied Convoys". Each sea zone will tell you how many convoys are staying at sea. If you see only three convoys staying at sea in the North Atlantic, you will know that some convoys have lost sentry status. Until I found out this method of seeing what was going on, I would have to redo the stay at sea step several times. Since I figured out that the global map told me what is going on, I have not had to redo the stay at sea step.
I thought I knew how to play this game....

I just had this problem today. So what do you do to correct it? Re-set sentry status in the Stay at Sea step? Or earlier? The Return to Base step is too late, yes?

That's really weird that there should be such a disparity. [&:]

I tend to check all sea area's during the Stay at Sea phase. If you have a fly out on screen and select the 0 box, you can see if a convoy will return to base or stay at sea...

Maybe the Naval Review form would be useful too? Er, I mean the form you can open from the Naval Review Details form. It shows what you've got in each port and sea area, and if I recall correctly, you can see the units by mousing over each sea area in the form. Maybe I remember wrong; I'm not at my gaming PC now.

Yes, but the point is - why should it be different? As I say I NEVER do anything with the CONV counters but put them to sea - and that is where they stay until sunk or I un-sentry them to move back to port. Very, very strange....

This happens to me when, during the turn or maybe in the stay at sea step, I have split off convoys to return to base. The other convoys in the area seem to become un-sentried in the return to base step.

For example, during the turn I split 2 CPs off of a 5 CP stack in the Central Pacific. I take the 2 CPs off of sentry manually to be able to return them to base. In the return to base step I find often that the other remaining 3 CPs will un-sentry.

Yes, they shouldn't be put off sentry. However, sometimes it just happens (and I haven't got a clue why, only that I didn't give the order...).
