Watched Sands of Iwo Jima last night and something came to mind......

What is it with Horrywood's fascination with Sargent characters with names beginning with the letter S?

Sargent Stryker

Sargent Steiner

Sargent Saunders

How many more can you come up with?

Sargent Shriver joined the Navy in 1941, before Pearl Harbor. He was a gunnery officer on USS South Dakota at the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands and the 2nd Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, where he was wounded. Afterwards, he trained for submarines and served as gunnery and torpedo officer on USS Sand Lance.

Thanks. I didn't know that. Compares favourably with Messrs Bush, Jr. and Romney. Must have been a nightmare
being a Sargent in the Navy.

Being from a land where we issue proper First Names, I assume he isn't a Senior NCO.

Interesting how history changes in the popular mind. I would have said he started the Peace Corps and was the nominee for Vice-President of the United States in 1972.

I remember hearing about those accomplishments when people were eulogizing him, but I didn't remember them until you mentioned them here. I was around in 1972, but I think I was more concerned about Christmas than the presidential election. My first awareness of political was when Nixon resigned, which was still ahead of most of my classmates, most of whom didn't know the capital of California (and they lived there).

I have a vivid memory of watching the 1972 election results on a portable B&W TV in our kitchen with my dad, who was a solid Nixon man. That was a dirty election of course. Look up the reason Shriver was even on the final ticket as well as Watergate's inception. That Nixon went from that historic sweep to resignation in two years says something about the man.

I was working my first job bussing tables at Virginia Beach when he resigned. On a portable radio somebody walked by with as I sat on a bench on the boardwalk after work. Watergate was the defining event of my young political life. I voted in the 1976 election. I had been 18 for three weeks.
