How do boarding pods replenish?

I used up all my troops on my pods and I figured I had to go load more at a colony. As I was about to do that, I noticed they had already replenished.

What's the mechanic for this?

Boarding pods replenish themselves after a certain amount of time. I cannot say exactly how much time as I've never paid close attention to it, but it's not that long.

If you're going to use boarding pods heavily, you should be aware of a bug involving multiple boarding pods on the same ship that prevents them from fully replenishing if the target escapes before all pods latch on.
