Naval mine detection by aircraft?

Post by Dili »

Do recon aircrafts detect naval minefields by increasing detection levels?

I was thinking if i could add one of those magnetic detonator Wellington's and have them for some propose related to mines. Maybe as a recon aircraft with a very slow cruise speed and max speed and limited to 1000ft altitude and not much range to not be employed for any other propose.

If possible what is the better device i should employ this propose radar? camera? some EW?

I have never heard that the game includes aerial detection of mines, and at this point I presume that is does not. I really doubt there is currently accommodation for any device that affects the chances of mine detection.

Kind of difficult to detect mines underwater with just cameras. There were some projects to make aircraft to detect and set off mines from the air. These usually involved some sort of large ring around the plane. However, I don't think any of these saw large deployment and I am not aware of any being used in the Pacific.

Just a bit of chrome, but doing something useful at same time related with their historic mission.
"Camera" was just a "cheat" to have the planes making something useful related with mines. It could be radar, a camera whatever works to just detect mines.
Since the game works with detection levels i thought maybe increasing them might show up the mines. But it is also possible that the routine concerning mine detection doesn't work with airborne devices.

IRL, maybe MAD devices could detect a big minefield.

The Germans had more 100 Ju-52 and Bv138 doing this so for them it wasn't something on the side.

Edit: it is even possible that a Japanese aircraft of that kind might have been developed if the magnetic mining of Japan started earlier. Maybe even was as is. But i don't know much.

I wasn't sure how many aircraft the Germans had for mine sweeping, but I guess there were more than I thought.

It is possible, flying low in shallow waters, but in deep might be hard to detect. For smaller minesweeper, they should see it if they are close enough. Too close will go BOOM!

I was surprised too wdolson.

@RisingSun
Yes that was a big problem, the plane had to fly at 30-70m altitude so needed to be fast that the explosion didn't hit it. Even then there were several instances of naval mines killing aircraft.

I can see a L2D2 for example converted by IJN to detonate the magnetic mines, like the Germans made with Ju-52. I think that would be the more appropriate model.
