Awful performance towards the end of the game

Post by HTG »

I am playing a big galaxy with 1000 star systems. There are 3 Computer players left in the game, beside the Ancient Guardians and the Shakturi are just emerging. The game became slower and started to lag as I conquered the galaxy and now it is constantly lagging and very slow. Soon the game will be unplayable. It is really annoying.

Are there any tips how to improve .NET performance? Maybe a 64-bit version of the game might improve performance??

Yes, my hardware is fast, quad core I7 3,33 GHz and fast graphics card, I have lots of RAM (12GB) and fast hdds. And yes, I did only build as much mining stations as I absolutely need.

Aye, post a save here. I usually play with a huge map and 700 systems; 4GB RAM 2GB Vid, dual-core 3.02 CPU.

You're welcome! I LOVE the performance enhancement I got, and if you use your computer to do something besides play Distant Worlds (I don't) then the bonus is multiplied...

Do you have respawning pirates on? In my experience they get more and more factions with thousands of ships hidden away around the galaxy hogging up resources.

Also 16gb RAM will never help you as games almost never use much over 4gb and typically become unstable and crash if modded to such heights. Therefore 16gb is usually inferior to 8gb as the computer needs more resources to administrate the available space... :)

My computer can handle the game up to endgame with max stars, but with pirates set to respawn my save times were almost 10 minutes for each. The quality of your harddrive should only affect savetimes though, and you were complaining of lagging? I've only experienced that on my laptop when I forgot to put the power setting to gaming.

I remember being quite impressed with the sheer stability so I usually played for a few hours between saving. It hurt when it finally did crash though..

Anyway the main reason as I see it would be constantly increasing numbers of ships, which could be more and more pirates getting spawned.

Hmm. In the 5th year I am paying 77 gangs 86k protection... Is there an upper limit on pirate gangs generated?

I that's part of the problem, whatever limit there is is really high. So even if you put it on many factions you'll end up with more factions if they are allowed to respawn. They also seem to build faster than the AI can kill them, especially as it seems to prefer simply paying them off further financing their infinite growth.

I had decent results with standard pirates on no respawn though. That way you can also take care of the problem yourself if you want. :)

Also what's endgame here? I once took it slow and had endgame be well after over a full century.

Turn down Pirates at the Game start menu otherwise you can be overwhelmed by them.

Overwhelmed by pirates [&:]

They should give a good fight, but what is a good fight for an experienced player may not be so fun for a new one.

It is of course possible to set up a likely impossible game. Harsh homeworld, extreme difficulty, pre-warp, very expensive research, lots of pirates, nearby...

If you have 16GB Ram you can always make a RAM Disk and fully transfer DW:U to that drive. Should really help with performance issues. There are some free programs out there, just google it.
