ATGM Realities

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

RE: ATGM Realities

Yeah, the videos are not representative of a full-on battle, but on the other hand, the guys in those tanks are usually just sitting around shelling buildings and aren't really pressed much; you'd figure they'd be able to keep an eye out pretty well. Then again, the level of training is questionable--though so is that of the ATGM crews. While I'd agree that a tank crew would logically be focused on terrain objectives on the attack, and might well see more than a stationary tank doing not much of anything, they'd also probably have a lot more distractions as well.

In short, I'm guessing it comes down to training and skill. Well prepared and trained (and experienced) crews are probably much more likely to notice stuff.

The Syria videos are far from perfect examples, but there really aren't too many examples out there of modern ATGM vs. tank engagements, so you kinda take what you can get!
