Gary Grigsby’s War in the East Huge Beta Update Available for Download

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Thanks morvael and all the others for the patch. [&o]

I've looked at the newest logistics report for the game between loki and me and the contrast is stark. I love the new detailed breakdown of the refit segment. And I'm incredibly happy about exports, upgrades and swaps working. Finally the masses of planes in the pools can be put to use and the Axis allies aren't living from the hand in the mouth regarding armaments. Here's the exports under 1.07 and 1.08:

AIRCRAFT EXPORTS
1 x Fi 156C exported from Germany to Finland as Fi 156C(F)
1 x Ju 88D-1 exported from Germany to Hungary as Ju 88D-1(H)

___ Finland ___
1 x Fi 156C (1/41) imported from Germany as Fi 156C(F) (10/41)
___ Hungary ___
5 x Ju 52 (9/39) imported from Germany as Ju 52(H) (10/41)
15 x Ju 87D (1/41) imported from Germany as Ju 87D(H) (6/42)
1 x Ju 88D-1 (7/40) imported from Germany as Ju 88D-1(H) (1/42)
___ Slovakia ___
1 x Fi 156C (1/41) imported from Germany as Fi 156C(S) (10/41)
9 x He 111H-3 (9/39) imported from Germany as He 111H-3(S) (9/39)

Also, two divisions have switched to captured BT7s. By 1942 they are obsolete, but I guess my tank crews will be happier sitting in them, compared to sitting in Panzer I and IIs. [:D]

Read change log, wow! Have developers any other life?

You would be surprised how many times real life has intervened and prevented working on the patch for as much as I would like.

I already found a problem with the patch. When creating "Leaders" in the editor, you can only choose (1-4) for rank instead of the menu before that gave you (1-29).[:(] Four ranks to choose from and they are all German!

It should properly adjust this inside the code and display correct rank name when the rest of the leader's parameters will be set (nationality, restriction). I'm pretty sure it works correctly as I tested it. And it's easier to enter it that way.

I've tried it several times and reloaded the patch too and yet I cannot choose the rank. I still only get 4 options. I've tried working this on the older patch and have had no problems. I am debating whether I should delete the game and reinstall it.

Found another problem with the editor; seems you can no longer create hypothetical vehicles (like the Panther F) now in the Ground Element box of the editor. The ID# is now fixed.

Ranks are working properly if you choose the nation first and if the chosen nation has nationalized rank names.
There's indeed a problem creating new elements and aircraft from scratch as you can't open the name menu for some unknown reason. Better start with copying an existing element and modify it to your needs. Will be added to the Bug list.

I've done everything I can in regards to the ranks, nothing has changed. I still get (1-4, that's it.

WAD, the list has been reduced to general-type ranks + rank name is automatically changed if nation or command restriction are altered. BTW it should be 0-4.
The rank number you choose will be auto-changed to nation specific names (if existing), some nation even have different names for ground-/air-only leader types.

The name thing must be fixed. Now I know why the ID was clickable :-) to facilitate entering name when empty

I've not played for quite a few months due to the arrival of another bouncing baby but this has renewed my enthusiasm.

I'm currently on version 1.07.15.

Can this Beta version be installed directly on top of my current installation or do I need to install previous updates?

Thanks.

Hypothetically speaking, say I am playing a game as the Germans and the war doesn't end in May'45 and I am still in combat in summer and autumn 1945; how am I going to add the tanks and planes that would have been produced if the war had not ended. The Panther F was to replace the Panther G and go into production in April'45. I like some of the improvements with this new patch, but you've pretty much taken away our ability to do any serious editing. I have had no problems with Leader rank or adding vehicles in the previous patch, now you say there is nothing wrong with your patch, I beg to disagree.[8|]

Too many pieces of the game are hardcoded to expect the game end in August/September 1945, while going into 1946 would cause outright crash (most tables are only for 41-45), so this limit must be observed at any time. I think I can make leader rank editing more user friendly (to properly change when nationality would be set after rank) and to be able to edit empty element or aircraft names by clicking on ID, but there is no option of extending the timeframe outside the 9/45 limit. Also, you will have to be patient, because for now I will be gathering feedback and making changes (and maybe releasing internal betas to the testers), but it will again take some time to reach the general public (of course not as long as it took to launch 1.08).

I added my new vehicles back in on a CSV import - otherwise I would have spotted the bug. [:(] Re-inputting each individually would take ages.

How come I had no problem editing Leader ranks and adding a few new vehicles in the 1.07.15 patch but now its impossible? I do have those changes I want to add on from some of my own created scenarios; how can I transfer them to new scenarios that I create?

The changes in 1.08 are huge. If I update the new generic data it completely trashes my Nemesis scenario but that is the danger of using embedded data and exactly why generic data is used by the Devs.

The easiest way is to export your old scenarios and the new files to CSV and do it in a spreadsheet programme like MS Excel. If you have only changed aircraft, ground elements and devices it's not too bad - if you have changed the TOE OB data it's a lot more work.

I really wanted to add the Panther F model and the Kugelblitz, and a few variants of the Hetzer to my scenarios, maybe 4-5 added vehicles at the most. I don't think this would likely cause a crash.

So for now the best way would be to copy existing similar element to another slot and start from there.
