Worth getting into this gme

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

I think that there will still be enough people playing this game after War in the West comes out for you to find an opponent. People will still be playing this game for years to come [:)]

Don't wait, I don't think that WITE 2 will be so different from 1.08 [experts will soon say if this is true] that you will need to relearn. I have been lax in my dedication to the game recently but would never take it off my hard disk. Financially I would hope that some discount for existing WITE owners would be offered but no guarantee.
As for opponents - probably the best and most informed group you will find. Also you will find lots of levels of ability and lots of people are happy to coach you even during a game.

Plan? What plan? Attack!!

I honestly am not sure player-vs-player is for everyone.
It has a VERY high learning curve, and games take hundreds of hours to finish.

You would be well advised to ensure you understand where game mechanics enable a-historical results (like the pretty common fall of Leningrad, or the Lvov giant encirclement on Turn 1).

There will certainly be a population playing the game for ever (see War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition).
Given some of the game improvements of War in the West (as I understand them; I'm not a play-tester), you might like that system's mechanics over the current WitE system. Logistically, War in the East lacks a good deal of realism (but to me that's a selling point, not a drawback). War in the East also gives the Soviet player a number of efficiency gains based on historical hindsight, and because only the Soviet side can create units.

You won't find many people around who say the game has no future, that's for sure.
Fall 2021-Playing: Stalingrad'42 (GMT); Advanced Squad Leader,
Reading: Masters of the Air (GREAT BOOK!)
Rulebooks: ASL (always ASL), Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game
Painting: WHFB Lizardmen leaders

Play vs the AI for a few months first.

Start with small scenario first and work your way up + read the forums ALLOT.

I played vs computer for about 4 months before doing HvH.

People will still be playing WITE after WITW comes out. WITW is a different sort of game that wont suit everyone.

Rules illuminate a complex game but the mechanics of playing are fairly straightforward. I learn best by just plunging in and keeping the rules minimized and referring to them often. Pelton is right, start with a small scenario as turn 1 as Axis in 41 Campaign can be overwhelming.

If you love history this is a great game!

Can you elaborate how WITW is a different type of game?

Way more focus on the air forces and logistics. Not everyone must like it. Also, Germany only defending in the period depicted in the game, no shifts in strategic initiative, just delaying the ineviteable. Axis fanboys will wait till WitE 2.0. Mind you, this is not my personal opinion, I just imagine what some people may not like about WitW when compared to WitE.

Hear your pain and in the same boat. Really want it but on the fence of digging in. Waiting to see what the price will be on the Christmas sale. Maybe we could hook up down the road. Something like - you are green and I am green we will all be green alike. [;)]
