Astonishingly good game

The development team behind the award-winning games Decisive Campaigns: From Warsaw To Paris and Advanced Tactics is back with a new and improved game engine that focuses on the decisive year and theater of World War II! Decisive Campaigns: Case Blue simulates the German drive to Stalingrad and into the Caucasus of the summer of 1942, as well as its May preludes (2nd Kharkov offensive, Operation Trappenjagd) and also the Soviet winter counter-offensive (Operation Uranus) that ended with the encirclement of 6th Army in Stalingrad and the destruction of the axis minor armies. With many improvements including the PBEM++ system, this is a release to watch for wargamers!

Astonishingly good game

Post by Sensei.Tokugawa »

Well, I have just gotten back to DC II in particular, playing full operation 'Uranus" scenario as Stavka in the PBEM mode, along with DC I, getting ready to give a full linked campaign a go as the Allies, and must say that those are damned great games, potentially the best operational level wargames I have ever come across. It even made me buy AT Gold ( I have never been a fan of ), but I've no opponent for Grymme's Soviet - Afghan War '79 - '89 and don't think anyone is going to appear. I am buying "Barbarossa" without any further hesitation once it gets released. [&o]

Well into the hostilities - Nov 24th 1942, southern Stalingrad flank pierced with Romanians in a disarray, the southern MSR cut and a jab westwards in progress to cut their basic MSE west - east, in the south Mozdok being the "schwerpunkt" in the meantime while the centre gets probed.

People were moaning that CB is an awful experience which reminds them WWI style trench warfare - partially because I have been studying and wargaming WWI for over three years now and mainly since that assertion is not true at all - I'd say they couldn't have been more wrong. If that reminds WWI then only its eastern front indeed which was generally fluid and volatile and not a constant deadlock in the west. Besides lots of folks think that they need to move each turn each unit and subunit they have at their disposal - long way from grasping the nature of manoeuvre warfare and disruption through mobility. It takes to realise which parts of the front need to move and where and what needs to remain on the defence - I was surprised myself how much faster the turns get then so you can toy with that extremely well researched game, reading the descriptions, biographical notes and emerging yourself in the experience. I misee certain DC II features in my DC I linked cmapaign, but indeed the Polsed didn't have time or materiel to rebuild destroyed or badly mauled units.

Started off Trappenjagd campaign against another opponent and think that this game engine is kind of unique indeed. I used to help Erik Nygaard play testing the early version of his operation "Weserubung" - the invasion of Denmark and Norway(well, that was for DC I as a matter of fact ... ) - and the more I observe how different features work in those games - starting with C&C to the naval and air war model - the more I am convinced that various theatres would be covered very successfully _ "barbarossa" on a divisional level ( in therms of a singe unit / counter size ) is a good pick, but I am thinking about the war in the Pacific, North Africa or Nomonhan and the battle at Khalkhin - Gol '39 - just to name a few. Getting operation "Market done - Garden" would also be an awesome addition.

Thanks for the kind words.

One of the things I am working on for DC3 is to finally make modding and scenario design more easy.

I am working on a system where there will be several intermediate editors that can create libraries and an easy editor that will allow players to just import a number of libraries, set some variables, place units and go!

Best wishes,
Vic

I agree with your comments Burroughs. If people are experiencing something like WW1 when playing this title, it is the fault of their tactics not poor game design. A careful review of the manual, especially the section on combat, is what is required I suspect. Too many of us, myself included, dive into a game without understanding all it's rules and their impact on play.

DC3 is looking even better. Only wish he had dropped the scale. Still the new features have more than made up for it. DC3 is will also be perfect I reckon for a WW1 version.
