Abstracted CD guns?

Post by Yaab »

How come each time Kavieng is invaded by the Japanese, the combat report says coastal gun shots were fired? The Allied unit there has no guns, but squads. Do bases have some inherent CD guns in them?

Invasion Support action off Kavieng (106,122)
Defensive Guns engage approaching landing force

3 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Is there any artillery in the hex? I believe it can fire at landing troops and ships.

No arty unit, no CD unit, no artillery devices. Just the base with port and one small unit comprised solely of squad devices. It is as if, apart from the coast watchers, bases had embedded, invisible arty tubes.

Screen shots of the defending units please.

There are no ghost devices embedded.  The CR you paraphrase represents 3 devices capable of firing at the landing troops, did in fact fire.  Those devices are not necessarily CD guns.

I just looked at the code, it looks like it might be a minor bug (I only gave a quick look, so I could be wrong). There really are no CD guns firing. I would report it in the tech support thread and let Michael take a look at it.

If that Allied unit is even there when the Japanese arrive the Allied player is seriously falling down on the job.

December 8th they need to start airlifting out.

It is a non-issue. The ships are never hit and teh number of shot never exceeds 3. I guess the local civilians hurl rocks into the water and create splashes, which Allies and Japs interpret as gun shots.

Good to know there are no hidden guns.

It's a random between 1 and 3. I don't think it's intended to happen, but in the end it looks like the game engine does nothing but add a message to the combat report.

Leave it in as FOW I say.... [:D]

Mistaken reports are plausible IRL and it makes no difference to results. Another intangible to keep the players guessing!! [:)]

(Just be prepared for the occasional WTF questions).

Cheers,
Reg.
