I was thinking of moving an HQ forward to be closer to the action once I captured airfields, but I don;t know the mechanics well enough yet. I tried moving follow up units and unloading them at ports I captured, but they didn't have the capacity.

I figured out where to unload them, but it would be a spoiler. :)

I played once on easy and one major victory easily, then played it on normal and it was pretty tough. I took everything but Messina, and thought I had Messina, but they kept reinforcing it with support units which kept spoiling my attacks.

Can we get any feedback on the Italian Campaign? This to me sounds most interesting as it was really the only region where Axis/Allies were relatively well balanced.

The Italian front is difficult for the Allies as it was historically. Italy is a defenders dream and with entrenchment and rough terrain the Allied air superiority is tempered somewhat. As the Germans it is a constant conflict on whether to heavily defend forward hoping that the Allies don't do an Anzio or keeping reserves (especially around Rome). You can rely on your N. Italy garrison in a crunch if the Allies invade at Rome or north. You only have a few north/south railroads though and the Allies can interdict your supplies more easily if they take Sardinia and Corsica.

Plan at least three defensive lines in advance if Germans. My first one is usually from Salerno to the river in front of Foggia. It only costs 1pt to create forts in Italy in non costal hexes so you can get a good portion of these lines entrenching before you need them. The crappy weather is the Germans friend in Italy. Keep in eye on the weather fronts and watch for high pressure systems that will dry out the mud and let the Allies and their dreaded bombers attack with abandon.

Enjoy.
