Luftwaffe...really can do something?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Luftwaffe...really can do something?

Post by imberbe »

Hello friends,
First of all nobody is offended by my question, because I spent years playing WITE which is easy to control this famous aerial armada.
BUT: Actually what can be done with the Luftwaffe? Besides intercept the bombers, I can use it in any way to attack or bombard enemies?
But thank you very much!

I would say aside from ground support (by the way here, is there a sure fire way to get GS to committ to a battle? I can't seem to get them into the air...) bombings against various targets at night.

Yes or use bombers like he-177 or older he-111 for bombing enemy cities...

LW should be used as a big stick to counter stupid invasions in 1943- 1944 April after that disband it unless your playing a newbie.

Absolutely. Once in awhile when the stars are aligned you can unleash all those hoarded bombers. The first turn after an invasion the Allies can be very vulnerable. Do a mixture of interdiction and unit attack (the only time I use unit attack as Luftwaffe is in this situation). I killed 10k Allies (hitting the temp ports really effective) last night in Italy because the Allies invaded by Rome and didn't have a lot of fighter cover. Night missions aren't that great but can be used (I do airfield attacks) and losses usually not bad. If you sense fighter cover not high use your bombers for interdiction.

By 1944 you probably want to take Luftwaffe off any GS missions as they will get slaughtered for little effect. Save fighters for intercepting the bombers attacking your rear where maybe they won't have escorts or very few.

Also, if Allied player does a deep air drop you might be able to target the paratroopers with high interdiction and wipe them out for their impertinence.

Sometimes you just have to take a hex and throwing everything you have in the Luftwaffe at it, even with losses is worth it so don't waste any planes, be patient and wait for the opportunity.

Operation Bodenplatte
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Bodenplatte

I remember reading a book on this operation (can't remember the title), and one scene sticks out vividly in my memory. One of the LW pilots had successfully bailed out over an American airbase and captured. During interrogation, he walked over to the window and pointed toward the many P-47s, caught on the ground, burning.

A few days later, the commander of the unit brought the LW pilot back into the room. The commander walked over to the window and pointed out row upon row of pristine new P-47s. The LW pilot turned to the commander and said: "THAT is why we are losing this war".

Pretty much sums it up.

You can interdict your own hexes (fhex interdict setting) to slow down possible allied advance directions. So allies should also cover area of coming advance to deny such interdicts.

No EFB box so I will save in other more important areas on the ground and not loss VP points as they get shot down like flies by mid 44.

I do save the fighters, only disband bombers ect

iam experimenting with putting all non-Reich protection day fighters into 2 "Flying Circus" commands.

Flying them along my own rail lines and over my depots. Localized air superiority.

My bombers ive turned into night bombers.
