WA AI in Battleground Italy

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

WA AI in Battleground Italy

Post by Nico165b165 »

Hello,

I'm currently trying Battleground Italy as Axis to learn how to play the Germans.

WA AI took Sicily, Italy surrendered in 09/1943, Sardinia and Corsica (with an allied amphib invasion for this one) fell in 10/1943. Then, nothing really happened. The AI is bombing me to death (I must have 20 planes left), but not an allied foot in mainland Italy in 05/1944.

Alternative strategy or bug ? Here's the situation and the save.

Most likely bug, and possibly due to the scenario as opposed to the campaign. We had trouble with the AI occasionally not landing in Italy during development. Something fixed several times but always some other reason came up to prevent the AI going to Italy. What could really help would be saves at the start of the German turn. One from December 43 and another from Mar 44 would help. You can email these to 2by3@2by3games.com, or zip them up and attach them to a forum post. Sorry you ran into this as I know it can be frustrating for the player to wait for an invasion that never comes.

I hoped it was my superior strategy that scared them ! It was too nice to be true.

Dont know which exact save would be more useful, so here's a link where you can download a zip with the whole save folder for this game -> http://demo.ovh.eu/fr/bad4990b7c3e77dabb8b1b194d8e2b7d/

Yes I`ve had the inactivity bug for the Italian scenarios.Even if the Salerno beaches are left clear there is no landing.

Allies do not use their Airforces at all

Also my Air force is totally massacred on the ground.I think that airfield attacks are far to effective.

I am trying out a `43 grand campaign to see if the allies behave better.I am playing on Normal level

Do you have saves too ? More saves, more chances to spot the bug(s).

We know the scenario can work with WA AI, the Wargamer did an AAR about it -> http://www.wargamer.com/article/3744/after-action-report-abstracts-from-the-war-diary-of-heeresgruppe-c-final-part

Uploaded my file in there. Similar issue like with the two others. After Sicily the AI goes and gets Sardinia and Corsica with massive force, but never makes an attempt for Italy. Can also echo the sentiments regarding the pulverization of the Luftwaffe. I've pulled back all planes to Germany, out of reach of the Allied air forces. After capturing Sardinia the AI is very aggressive in conducting airfield bombardments with devastating results. I have seen occasions where some 180 planes were obliterated on the ground.

Also ran a couple of AI/AI games (without saves, however) and encountered the same issue of the Allies not invading mainland Italy.

The best save would be just after Sardinia and Corsica were fully captured.

I remember this happened to me during the beta. The hapless Italians made a heroic stand at Palermo while the Wehrmacht ran for the Messina straights. After several turns as I recall the Allies just stopped attacking Palermo, and never invaded Italy.

Thanks, that Dec save should be just what we needed. Based on it, it's likely to be a BG Italy problem only as it doesn't have the needed resources. Gary's looking at it now and we hope to get a fix in the first patch which should go out late next week. Sorry you had this problem. Every small scenario has different AI quirks that can come up so every change can cause a problem in one scenario but not others.
