German troop movement to critical areas?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

German troop movement to critical areas?

Post by ratprince »

I am curious if the German AI will move divisions from France to Italy if they are needed there? For example, I am 40 miles from the Po river in January 44. I am encountering HUGE resistance. Panzer divisions, constantly more infantry divisions..etc..etc.. Are these coming from France? Or are they pulled from the balkans, EF, etc..?

Ultimately I am curious if the German AI and/or a human player can shift their units willy nilly across Europe?

You have garrison requirements limiting how many German units available but by January 1944 the Germans are starting to build a surplus of units. If you are by the Po river though all of the German N. Italy units required for garrison can be used. The AI seems to be able to deploy more units than a human player can without penalty but not egregiously so.

The Allies really don't have a numerical superiority over the Germans but they do have airpower. Germans biggest problem is having to defend a lot of ground for what Allies might do. Once you invade N. France a flood of Germans will be released from garrison duty.
