Vetkin vs. Red, Ger v. Sov 1943
Moderator: MOD_SPWaW
The German rear vhexes have been seized, the lonely Tiger left to protect them has been outflanked and killed. Soviet forces are turning around to deal with two Tigers that remain in the center. Elsewhere in the south, steps are being taken to contain a German counterattack.

Yes, the home hexes have been taken but you will pay a great price for it sooner than you think. A heroic 120mm mortar crew improvises and mounts the mortar tube on 2 MG bipods and fires, destroying an M10 Wolverine.
2 T-34s spotted to the south/middle but no action taken so far. A bunch of partisans and MCs are forced back by MG42s, some scatter through the sheer amount of lead the MGs are throwing at them. The German engineers bunker down to await the destruction of these tanks.

What a Lucky Day.
Russians get lucky: the German rear 88 ATG that came alive after being suppressed earlier jammed this time
firing at attacking partisans.
The Russian armored group that seized the rear vhexes proceeds forward eliminating another Tiger that was coming to help things out in the rear but ran out of available shots firing at pesky Soviet MCs. Little history was made by T-34 which survived two shots from another 88 ATG, approached the Tiger from a side and killed it from the first shot. I've never seen that before. German HQ has been discovered but Soviets didn't have anything available to dispatch them. The southern 88 AA gun has been also eliminated by another T34 that traveled pretty far to get it. That gun previously fired on several of my MCs and AFVs so it was also out of shots available. In the south, Russian MCs approach Germans from the rear and harass the infantry. T34s approach the Tiger left there but stay out of his LOS for now. In the center a Russian M10 is in trouble being surrounded by another Tiger, Panther and AA truck. Russian command dispatches another group of T34s to relieve it, they attack the Tiger which previously eliminated an unlucky SU-76M. Tiger is still alive so next round will be interesting. Some miscellaneous German infantry is mopped up elsewere on the map.

Desperate times, Desperate measures
German kampfgruppe is running out of time and armor, but decide to make do with what it has left.
To the south a pesky MC squad is machine-gunned to death while a flak HT riddles an AA truck with 37mm, forcing the crew out of the vehicle.
To the rear, 120mm crews once again excel in using their tubes as heavy bazookas. Another M10 is destroyed in this way. A T-34 crew panics as a near miss (!) from a 120mm forces them out of the vehicle and into the burning hex.
Without artillery support, the German force is desperate and is using anything and everything to slowly tear away at the Soviet horde.

Undeterred by persistent German resistance, Soviets continue mopping up remaining German units. The southern group capability has been further degraded by a combined effort of partisans distracting the last Tiger and Katyusha rocket truck pounding it till it blew up, next T34s moved in to finish off crew, infantry and HT in adjacent hexes. In the center German AA truck that last turn shot up Soviet AA truck gets a round from T-34. The crew of the Tiger previously attacked bailed. A couple of German 120mm mortars are dealt with. T34 is lost to German infantry when it was looking for a Panther known to be present in the area.

German forces fighting a desperate delaying action, with ammo-less 120mm mortar squads fighting as infantry.
Forces in the south hunker down even as they get smashed by 76mm artillery. A partisan squad is satchel charged to pieces there.
To the rear the only success is the HQ charging and grenading a partisan squad to death.

T-34s found the German HQ and eliminated it. The remaining Patner fought to the last being vastly out numbered and surrounded and managed to take out T34 and M10 before succumbing to side shot from M10. Elsewhere German engineers are running wild from T-34s with infantry support. Will German reinforcements arrive? We shall see.

German reinforcements will not arrive... The kampfgruppe has held as well as it could (I think) The hills are ravaged with both German and Russian armor. The Russian forces will move on but with much less force than it could have had...
German resistance continues however. Some crewmen are slaughtered by MG42 fire.

game over
Russian T34s moved further south to attack the remaining German forces there seizing the southern vhexes.

"Hehehe don't worry"?! 7K buys you a lot of Soviet equipment in 42, I bet you can't wait to throw it at me. I'm trying to remeber how Viking2 and Gary Tatro beat me before in this kind of scenario. May get to it tonight.

Actually, the forces have been bought awhile ago, the problem is deployment, i just don't have a continous amount of time enough to intelligently place them. This is further complicated by most of the map being covered by woods.

And the battle begins...
Soviet troops quickly advance through the thick forest, getting hit here and there by scattered mobile howitzers and mortars... Why mobile ones? I'm still thinking....
In return the Soviets fire their Katyushas all across the front.
Both sides suffer around a dozen casualties before the battle even starts because of this trade in artillery.
No enemy contact yet.
