Pilot Replacements

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Pilot Replacements

Post by Dereck »

How can I set it up so that pilots will be added automatically to the squadrons/groups that need them? Having to go in and do it through the Commander's Report screen every turn is tiring to no end.

Thanks

All pilot replacement is done automatically when you receive/repair planes (logistics) or during the air maintenance sub-phases (air exec). You can affect pilot replacement policies by toggle replacement settings between - none/normal/trained pilots.

Adding them manually in CR or group detail is a supplemental feature which allows you to fill some groups to the max. Usually you may find that groups missing pilots marked yellow, which means that they have enough pilots to operate ready planes, but still missing to max. So strictly speaking there is no immediate benefit, but in case you low on pilot pool you may "reserve" them into particular groups.

Pilot replacements are generally automatic unless you've chosen some other setting. It is not instantaneous but if you don't fight for a week or two the squadron should go to full strength. If you have a shortage of planes I don't think it sends replacements if planes not in the unit for them. If you've chosen to only have fully trained pilot replacements go out to a unit that may be a constraint but in two dozen games I've played I've never manually added replacements.
