Time for some scores and totals and ships sunk postings so I can get a feel for who is winning.

Condor, we've all tried that engineer-massacre mission. Works for my opponents all the time but never for me. However, you're to be commended for originality and for not letting Grotius have the time to prepare the ground!

Thanks for the kudos, Luskan. Nice to know I'm not totally off the wall with my concepts.

Anyhow, to a long overdue score update -

Condor is getting hammered: (IJN 6457, USN 3101)

36 USN ships (2CV, 1CA, 12DD, 1DM, 1PG, 2MSW, 2SC, 10AP, 5AK) are at the bottom of the ocean, compared to 11 IJN vessels (1CVL, 6DD, 1PC, 1SS, 2AP).

The USN has lost 283 aircraft, compared to 169 of the IJN. The list I have (with limitation of FoW understood - until my opponent can confirm/deny) is as follows:

F4F4 = 53, F4F3 = 16, SBD = 85, TBD = 28, PBY = 21, SOC-3 = 9, C47 = 13, Beaufort = 2, Wirraway = 1, P400 = 3, P39 = 9, P40 = 1, F5A = 1, B25 = 5, B26 = 9, B17 = 8

Claude = 1, Rufe = 2, Zero = 41, Val = 21, Kate = 64, Nell = 14, Betty = 12, Mavis = 7, Jake = 5, Alf = 2

I sure hope the "industrial might" of the USA kicks in soon :).

I'm learning how to hide in thunderstorms and using FTs a lot better than earlier in the game. My opponent is adeptly pouncing on almost every mistake I make.

We're on hold for a bit until we can resolve the "Lost Bridage" issue (the disappearance of 400 troops of the 21st Bde of the 7th Australian division - see the post in Bug Reports for more info).

More to come :)

Return of the Condor

Post by Attack Condor »

When we last were here, we had to replay history due to the abduction of the 21st INF Bde by forces unknown... We have sorted it out, except for the three transports sunk pre-abduction who survived the replay. They are steaming right now on a direct path to Rabaul, where my opponent should put history right.

So, picking up from 7/3/42.......

Hovey was evacuating the last of the expeditionary force off of Nevea, and luckily got away from the persistent I-29. It was a mistake to try and develop Nevea this early. With Luganville "secure" (Port = 6, Airfield = 6, Fort = 4+) the next stop is Wunpuko... island hopping as we go north. Nevea is on the list of things to do, but trying to do so now results in the base being too exposed and the supply line being too long. The mines dropped there by the IJN will undoubtedly be there when I return.

Liberation!

After what air support from Australia could be arranged, the final attack on PM is made with the 18th INF Bde, the 21st INF Bde, part of the 7th INF Bde, and the Kanga force from Wau. I was rather suprised that the 7-1 odds were achieved - the defenders must have been low on supplies and very fatigued.

A fifth combat force underway to PM has been recalled, and the re-basing of units can begin. Fortunately, I have enough supplies at PM for that many troops, although I will not maintain four full strength combat units on PM for very much longer.

GG is operational, and a full squadron of F4F-4s (36 planes) is based there. HQ 3rd Division and two 3rd Div INF Bdes are currently stationed there, along with 2 combat engineer units. A second unit of fighters will arrive within two days, along with the BF to get GG cranked up and being the thorn in the side of the IJN I had envisioned it would be. Supply is the weak point here, and all available LBA in Oz have been assigned supply duties to GG.

Four full strength C47 squadrons are in Australia, ready to begin rotational supply and troop transport duties.

The bad weather, which until now has been my friend, covering the FT TFs I used to move units and material to GG and PM, is now working against me, causing me to ponder whether operational losses incurred will be worth the gains of flying missions such as supply and transport.

P-39s, P-40s and P-400s have been refitting in Australia while PM was in the hands of the IJN, and they are now ready to return to their forward assignments (I'll flip a coin to see who goes out first and who stays in Oz as replacements).

A very busy month of July - and still three weeks of it are left!

More to come.....

Strange goings on in NZ, where the IJN mounts a comeback effort to retake PM and GG.

And - for the first time ever my forces have managed to shoot down a recon plane!

(little consolation if I cannot keep what I've taken - I was completely suprised by the fast response by the IJN after they lost PM...only now am I able to get aviation support to the base)

Another first...a SC BB went to Irau to disrupt whatever plans the IJN had for the base. Seems a CD unit was there, and it effectively "disrupted" a destroyer - who now has a ticket back to Pearl <sigh>. The 3 in and 4 in shells bounced harmlessly enough off of the cruisers, but the destroyers had no such protection :(.

The battle for New Guinea intensifies, as Grotius has neatly turned the tables on me - almost as if he was waiting for me to re-take PM so he could re-take it back. 40K troops ashore at PM, and about 18K at GG.

I have enough troops at PM to draw the conflict out - and even GG won't fall easily - but without making providions for holding what I've taken, my men are left high and dry: They can't get out, and I can't supply them.

Grotius has parked a CV TF of at least 4 carriers 30 miles off of PM - and I'm forced to watch it helplessly as it shuts down PM from the air. My transports are getting in - but is the loss of the transports to the IJN fighter pilots worth getting a few more supplies ashore?

A feeling of remorse permeates the staff office, as eyes look to me expectantly - hoping for a miracle.

<sigh>

I need a cigarette.

More to come.

Not much to say... GG has been lost, PM is not far from being a memory itself, and almost 20,000 allied troops in NZ are wondering what the hell happened, and if the stories about the Japanese prisoner of war camps are true.

About the only good news at GG was the fact I was able to fly off the operational aircraft before the base fell, and a TF of 2 MSW and 1 AO were able to slip out of GG and into the open ocean to avoid being captured and destroyed.

Another valuable lesson learned.

The time will come to put it to use.

Yes, the Empire Strikes Back. <grin>

I am relieved the Gili Gili has fallen, and that I have captured several thousand prisoners there. An Allied force remains outside the base, fighting on; we hope to eliminate it shortly. To be honest, I was more worried about taking Gili Gili than PM, since I committed three times as many troops to the operation in PM. And yet GG fell first, much to my relief.

I had wondered what happened to Condor-san's small group of surface ships docked in Gili Gili. I had assumed they were undergoing repairs and would not be able to escape easily; indeed, I had half hoped to capture them once I captured GG. But somehow they slipped out from under the watchful eyes of my CV TF. Likewise, Condor-san wisely moved his planes out of GG just moments before the base fell. A couple of damaged planes were destroyed on the field, but the rest escaped.

In the meantime, Condor-san has deployed his subs throughout the invasion zone, just as I did in opposing SoulBlazer's invasion of PM in my game (of scenario 19, as Allies) against him. His subs have hit a couple of targets and will surely hit more.

Thus far, the invasion does appear to a success, but Port Moresby hasn't fallen yet. We shall see.

Fall of Port Moresby

Post by Attack Condor »

Port Moresby has fallen.

Once again, the Japanese Empire is in control of New Zealand. My attempt to draw engineers in and then jump them backfired, as the only troops drawn in were infantry units, who did some jumping of their own.

All of the shipping and most of the aircraft managed to evacuate NZ and are now licking their wounds in Australia. Unfortunately, the troops in New Zealand weren't as lucky...........

Nothing can be done about that now.

I made a mistake of not supplying my conquerors the first time.

It won't happen the next time the Japanese are evicted from lands not rightfully theirs.

But as to today's combat...

The S-boats continue their impressive record, while the newer class submarines still are trying to work the bugs out.

Tatsuta took another torpedo, and intelligence confirms the sinking of Koyo Maru, Mangu Maru, and Nankai Maru. Small consolation, but better than nothing. Thus far, 43 USN vessles are sunk compared to only 15 of the IJN. Way too many of my ships have been sunk way too early.

Congratulations again to Grotius for his conquering of NZ again.

Enjoy your victory. :)

Back in action, 7-19-42 - rain, no combat reported anywhere in theater, but Allied intelligence reports decoding the following IJN radio traffic today.....

The Batavia Maru was reported sunk in PM as a result of combat damage..........

In the Solomons, intercepts from the light cruiser Jintsu reporting it has struck a mine while steaming in the narrows between Malaita and San Cristobal.....

Also, coastwatchers report the IJN has at least one CV at their Shortlands base....

The fortification of Australia continues, with the New Guinea HQ and forces subordinate to it at Cairns, Northern Command HQ and their INF units at Townsville, the Aus 7th division HQ and its INF units at Rockhampton, and the Aus 3rd Division HQ and its INF units at Brisbane. Lost of engineers in Australia, building lots of stuff.

Cooktown has been abandoned.

IN SWPAC, air, naval, and ground forces gather around Noumea and Luganville. Luganville has a fortification level at 6 and it continues to improve day by day.

The development of the base at Wunpuko continues......

A lifetime of boredom, interspersed with moments of sheer terror....

Post by Attack Condor »

An apt quotation, as for almost a week, the only combat to report has been the mine hit on the IJN light cruiser Jintsu. I rather doubt the damage amounted to more than scratched paint on a combat ship, but I'll take anything now that doesn't put Allied forces in harm's way.

Every aircraft capable is now running ASW operations in both theaters. A multitude of SCs protect my main harbors at Noumea and Luganville.

SBDs cover the approach to Luganville, and Wunpuko is rapidly becoming the fightertown I envisoned for Port Moresby so long ago.

Australia is secure. If the IJN commander wants to sail to the Barrier Reef, then come get some :).

In the SOPAC area, submarines are numerous enough that and IJN traffic will be checking almost each hex it traverses. It only takes one to get lucky........

The Seabees have landed.

The 1st Marine division, complete with HQ and support units is in place.

Transport vessels are in place.

Airpower is in place.

Operation Pebbles nears.

Maps and plans will be declassified soon.

More to come....

Luganville continues to add to its defenses, and stockpile fuel and supplies

Yes, the Empire has retaken all of New Guinea, and, apparently, New Zealand as well. Our troops occupy Port Moresby, Gili Gili, and Wellington. <grin>

We are rushing now to reinforce our bases in the Solomons. Condor-san has been very quiet the past few turns, which can only mean that he plans to invade something. We hope he tries to do so! The Americans play into our hands if they try offensive operations this early.

As for our plans, they remain classified. Suffice it to say that certain Allied countries had better start learning Japanese soon. Hai! Hai! Banzai!

No losses, but damaged big birds take a while to heal up.

In other news, the summer crop of mines planted in June and the early part of July are starting to bear fruit. First the light cruiser Jintsu and now the destroyer Kazegumo which was hit last night in PM harbor :). Kazegumo apparently was part of a PC/DD group - each of whom was able to "locate and destroy" a mine. I'm sure the IJN commander will appropiately honor and reward the commander of the Kazegumo for his innovative approach to destroying mines with his hull, thereby saving the Empire precious rifle ammunition.

As to whether I plan to invade something, the answer is yes. Whether it is Irau, PM (again) or the peacful sleep of the IJN commander is yet to be revealed :D.

As to learning a new language, as a public service for the reindoctrination of our IJN foes into world dominated by the Allies, your word for today is "capitalism".

Say it slowly: "Cap - it - al - ism"

You'll learn to love it ;)

More to come....

Well, it comes as no surprise to hear that Condor-san plans to invade something again. If the Americans do invade Irau, or PM, Lunga, or anything else, we shall respond with overwhelming force. Massive reinforcements to forward bases are already on the way.

In the meantime, the still-classified Operation Fuji progresses nicely.

Yes, the Empire has retaken all of New Guinea, and, apparently, New Zealand as well. Our troops occupy Port Moresby, Gili Gili, and Wellington. <grin>

Grotius-san.

Tell me about it! Wellington is over run with them! I am taking the family and heading for the hills (wish me luck). Noticed a couple, being a military officiando, with the new Semi automatic Nikon FS352 - get through a roll in 2.35 secs apparently.
