Cost of attaching units?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Cost of attaching units?

Post by Grotius »

11.2.4 says that a leader's Admin rating affects, among other things, "determining the cost of attaching units to the leader’s headquarters unit." I have a couple minor questions about this. I know it's not crucial, but I like to understand stuff!

1. 7.7.3 says that attaching a support unit to an HQ costs freight points. Is this cost reported anywhere in the UI? I don't see it in the Shift-E Logistics Report.

2. Does it cost freight (or supply or something else?) to attach a combat unit to an HQ?

3. Does it cost freight to attach a support unit to a combat unit?

Thanks, and my apologies for asking such detailed little questions.

Edit: I should add why I asked this. I have one leader with good ratings except his Admin of 3. I'm trying to figure out how big a downside this is. Admin affects repair rates, movement -- and attachment costs, apparently.

Hmm, no replies yet. Anyone know what the "cost" of attachments is?

I think not, but it is roughly equal to the the transport cost of the SU.

No.
3. Does it cost freight to attach a support unit to a combat unit?
Yes, it should cost.

The 11.2.4 reference to the cost of attaching a unit was an old WitE reference when it cost admin points to attach units to a HQ. This is not the case in WitW, thus this reference should have been removed.

My understanding is that movement of support units over water via a change of attachment was supposed to use up some of the port capacity (because they're having to get on ships to get where they're going). I'm not sure about that though. I doubt the leader comes into play in any of this.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Joel,

Thanks for your reply. I just posted a question about attaching SUs over sea hexes. I seem to be unable to do it. I can transfer SUs back to England from North Africa, but not intra-theater in the med, at least from Africa to Sicily or Italy. What am I missing?
