limited number of units per hex?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

limited number of units per hex?

Post by jnpoint »

Do I understand this right: There can only be 3 units in a hex? and if there are 3 in a hex, I can't create a fortified unit in that hex?

Yes, though you can use the fortified unit to build up the fortifications, then when they reach the level you want, disband it and move another normal combat unit into the hex in its place.

And the British in particular have the ability to absorb strong multifunction armor or infantry brigades into divisions as support units effectively increasing stacking limits.

If you have units close by and behind the line in Reserve mode, they can participate in both attacking and defending based upon your leaders' die rolls. This is a great way to bolster both defense and attack for both Allies and Axis. I believe that brigades/regiments are more likely to be committed from Reserve mode than divisions, but I could be wrong on that.

Can someone confirm that?
Reserve mode: do I have to change the mode manually or does the AI do that?

You have to change the mode manually. There are three toggles on the unit on the right side of the screen: Regular/Refit/Reserve. (Yep, the three R's!)

If it is anything like WITE, reserve commitment is not a guarantee. Smaller units are more likely to be committed and it helps if the unit being attack belongs to the same HQ as the reserve unit. Along with that, the commander rating will play a big role as well.

Sometimes reserve commitment can be a bad thing if the attack happens to be particularly overwhelming so that it doesn't matter if reserves were committed or not. The only thing that happens in this case is the reserve gets crushed along with whatever was being originally attacked.
