How is the ground combat model in WITW?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

How is the ground combat model in WITW?

Post by tiger111 »

What do you think of the ground combat side of things?

How does it compare tto War in the East.?

Rather than just better/same or worse please elaborate on what brings you to ypur conclusion.

Thanks

I haven't played enough to form an opinion on the differences between the games, but one important feature of WITW is that combat in a hex can impose an additional movement point cost for all movement through that hex. You can longer have one unit spend its turn clearing the enemy from a hex so that fresh units can exploit through with an entire turn's worth of movement points.

I agree with Paul, the combat-movement penalty is a significant change.

Also, the new logistics system has some implications for ground combat. Now you have to worry about not outrunning your depots, which are not as flexible a source of supply as HQs.

The new weather system is more granular and interesting. You'll see a sprinkling of light and heavy mud during rainy seasons -- not all one or the other. I like it better.

In addition, my impression is that in WITW, it's not quite so easy to starve enemy units of supply/fuel/ammo by cutting them off. I'm still learning how this part of WITW works, though.

All that said, the basic ground-combat system is fundamentally similar to that in WITE. I'd say it's been refined and improved, overall. The biggest changes are the air war, logistics, strategic bombing, amphibious operations, and the weather.

I can't say for sure yet, but from a first impression the issue of the retreat losses seems to have been worked out compared to WITE. Also, divisions don't drop to a very low CV immediately after being encircled. I have to admit that I wasn't too pleased when even after two turns the encircled German divisions in tough terrain still had a defensive CV of 50. [:D]

As long as you have freight you can fight. The pockets of WitE do not exist in this game. In my AAR A Pleasure Cruise the allied beachhead was isolated for most of the game but still able to fight it out until they finally ran out of freight after the air transports could no longer keep up with demand.

Yes in WITW encircled units can last surprisingly long especially if they have depot that have lot of stored supplies.

Battle reports are also more informative in WITW and more easy to understand.

As far as I know, all the significant combat issues from WITE were addressed during WITW development. Every combat now also gives you the option of a detailed report to see exactly how each of your units/squads/tanks performed and what caused losses/disruption/damage. I haven't seen any bizarre results after watching many, many combats in the release version.

I think it's the best game of World War One trench combat ever devised.

There are definite periods of the war that looked more like WWI than our common conception of WWII on both the eastern and western fronts.

Think Leningrad and Normandy.

Yes, I see the parallels....

The amphibious landings...the strategic bombings. The cracking open of a line with armour and breakthroughs.

The massive air interdictions. Wow...you're right! Its WW1 all over again.

Amphibious landings WWI? Other than Turkey exactly where were these landings that turned the tide of the war?

Strategic bombing? You mean the Zeppelin raids? They sure were a major impact, not.

So other than the armor breakthrough's and static lines at times this game is nothing like WWI.

However [:)] , if you really want a WWI experience, then use no Strategic bombing by the Allies. And can only invade one time and it has to be in the Med [X(]
