RE: April 19, 1945 - CV fight

Post by ny59giants »

Since early AE days, I've almost always had my carrier TFs follow a strong SC TF just in case my opponent sends in a SC TF to take on my CVs. In early war I often use Force Z with some American additions as PoW has the best AA platform for many months. In mid-44, I have the two Iowa Class BBs. Following real life, I use small 4 to 6 DDs usually Fletchers as they are nimble enough to not get hit by just about anything to be ahead as pickets.

Unless your opponent has Sams on his CVs, your Hellcats and Corsairs should be able to hold their own.

As a general rule, I like forward screening TF's too. What I have found in this enhanced empire mod
is that the empire has been able to breach that forward TF 4 times and harass CV's (or AP's). I don't really know
if I am doing something wrong, or he has a secret sauce.

In late war, I typically use a dozen DD's with a CL and several DE TF's about 4 hexes out to cover approaches. he seems to be really good at knowing when to counterpulse.
He picks days when the CP cap is tied to the invasion, so there are only a few potential hexes to assault. He throws away the naval assets, or expects to.

Pretty effective tactics with an inferior force.

RE: April 20, 1945 - Rabaul Falls

Post by topeverest »

CV fight did no materialize, but I spotted the main empire fleet for the first time since December 1944. And it is larger than I thought it could ever be. Admiral Kamikaze is using that extra production capability to its fullest potential.

Subs Sub war has been fairly constant, usually about 2 empire ships hit per turn. most activity is between Balikpapan and Soerabaya - and around Iwo Jima. 9 subs sunk this game month versus 23 reported ships sunk - 10 of which tankers. These losses are far more acceptable than the 1 to 1 I was getting parked in front of Tokyo.

Port Blair Invasion proceeding without incident. not reported spotted yet, but because I have spotted the bulk of the empire carrier near the Phillipines, I am not substantially worried.

New Guinea & Solomons Rabaul fell this turn. Allied CV and amphibious forces planning for operations around Sorong. it will take at least a game week before I can launch. plans are to take Biak as a forward operating base and move in from there. I hope to get a CV fight out of it too.

RE: April 23, 1945 Action Resumes

Post by topeverest »

Pretty active turn. Air losses 13 Allied to 129 Empire.

sub: Bag a large tanker and put two fish into the CVL Pigwa, an option-add CVL in this scenario that he obviously built. This occurred near east side of Mindanao as the empire combat fleet withdrew from contesting Sorong area in advance of my upcoming assault. Aside - I typically put two subs in a wolf pack, and I typically get both to attack separately when a target emerges. In this case, the second sub attacked but was spotted by escorts and sunk outright. The sub that hit the Pigwa was heavily damaged in ASW and is headed back to yard. Three other subs in the area are converging on Pigwa location, as the ship was still afloat this turn in an escort TF.

Port Blair: British fleet is two turns from getting to the PB hex. Empire launched multiple air raids, two of which were large. Both slipped a few planes through the CAP at very heavy costs. 1 AK took 1 fish at the cost of more than 100 empire fighters and bombers. I doubt he thinks it was worth it. I bombed the base with the bulk of my nearby 2E and 4E around Rangoon. No AA losses make me believe there is little or no supply left on the base. Two turns will tell. I expect a DD counterpulse...so I have brought several SCTF to cover the approaches.

New Guinea and Solomons: Fleet with CV's and three invasion TF's will set off for Sorong area next turn from Hollandia, which is being built up to a superbase. It now appears there will be no resistance. recon intel will arrive this turn, but there appears only to be troops at Sorong. Babo and Biak are not occupied and I will get for free. In the solomons, Munda garrison was eliminated this turn, leaving Port Moresby, Shortlands, and Namatanai are still in enemy hands. PM is bypassed and periodically bombarded, but the other two still need to be taken. Around Guadalcanal there are two bases that need to be taken / isolated Tulagi and Lunga (bypassed). Three TF are on the way there and will invade before month end.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Munda (111,134)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 49418 troops, 1016 guns, 870 vehicles, Assault Value = 1386

Defending force 2652 troops, 30 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 8

Japanese adjusted defense: 4

Allied ground losses:
14 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

Defending units:
70th Ind.Mixed Brigade

Gilberts: Bombing by 2E and 1E started on Arorae. Again this base may be out of supply, because it has been periodically targeted for bombing and I haven't allowed resupply in 6 months. Further up at Tarawa, the enemy has 50K troops and recently succeeded in resupply. That base will have to be bypassed and reduced.

RE: April 23, 1945 Ongoing Mavis attacks

Post by topeverest »

Interesting note here, the enemy is using Mavis to harass shipping in and around the Solomons. He is hitting an average of 2 transports a day. I am chewing many of these planes up, but he must have plenty of experienced pilots he is willing to burn. 10 ships torpedoed so far at a cost of about 30 lost mavis and Emily. Most pilots would have to be lost. Still pretty effective. My CAP not working here

RE: April 23, 1945 Counterpulse Port Blair

Post by topeverest »

Activity still surrounding Port Blair, Sorong, Solomons, and Gilberts. Empire sent small counterpulse to Port BLair and an exciting combat sequence ensued.

Subs: No activity this turn, but results this month include 12 subs for about 30 'confirmed' kills and more damageds. For this time in the war and considering all the extra empire assets, I like that result. As before I have to stay about 10 hexes outside Japan and most of the success is between Iwo and Manila.

Port Blair empire pulsed in 3 CL and 5DD in an attempt to get to the CV's providing cover for Port Blair. He also launched a large air assault against the CV's. I have 4 SCTF, three of which with heavy BB / CA presence. He found the one that only had DD's and PG's. It was a very exciting combat, but in the end the empire withdrew even though they won the combat. British air swarmed in and sunk about half the ships, including 2 CL's.

Sorong enemy is gathering a major combined counterpulse, amphibious resupply, and CV force in the area. Some major air combat occurred this turn, but no hits. Massive empire air losses. he continues to suffer from coordination issues, but then he did launch from about 6 separate bases and CV's. If he could get them to go mostly together, he certainly would wreak havoc - but it has not been what happened. Next turn probably will be interesting.

Solomons: Continued grind. Invasions of Tulagi and Tassafaranga. Both will take time to grind the enemy down. Shortlands also major base that will take weeks to reduce. meanwhile pushing up troops to Rabaul for future operations.

Gilberts: More of the same bombing and minor raiding going on. Will be about a game month before the invasions start.

RE: April 23, 1945 Counterpulse Port Blair

Post by topeverest »

Very aggressive counterpulse here. Like the move. As I said, he found my weakest SCTF and tried to punch through. Almost worked.
5 PG's eventually sunk.

RE: April 23, 1945 Air Losses Summary

Post by topeverest »

Here are the daily losses...
24 allied to 341 empire. I don't think he has experienced pilots left

NOTE - campaign total air losses are now 2 to 1 in favor of allies. But marginal combats now are typically at least 5 to 1

RE: April 27, 1945 Big battles

Post by topeverest »

Think I have screwed up dates a bit. But the current game date is April 27, 1945.

Allies received major counterpulse at Sorong, and handled it well. That said, the presence of so many empire surface ships has caused me to pull back my naval force and regroup for a more concerted attack. Lots of air combat, and empire sends its CV compliment at the American CV's at sorong to no effect.

Subs: Sink an empire DD in the straight of Malacca, hard to say but probably a reinforcement task force for the Medan Sabang area. Two of my subs got pummeled by E boats but survived - - - headed back to shiyards. beat off another sub near Port Blair and Sorong.

E No.106 fails to find sub, continues to search...

Underwater explosion, debris and oil appear on surface!
Escort abandons search for sub

Sub attack near Tandjoengbalai at 48,78

Japanese Ships
DD Okikaze, Torpedo hits 2, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Thorough

SS Thorough launches 6 torpedoes at DD Okikaze
Sub escapes detection

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack near Little Andaman at 45,59

Japanese Ships
SS I-173, hits 21

Allied Ships
DD Stembel
BB Richelieu
CA Dorsetshire
CL Santa Fe
DD Stevens
DD Terry
DD David Taylor
DD Strong
DD Stockham

Port Blair more air attacks on retreating empire CL task force. Sunk several DD's and remaining CL. Not sure if any ships got away. Attacked the base with ground troops, and the empire has a level 8 fort after reduction. It will take a long time to break that base! I am pushing troops to Rangoon to invade Little Andaman. CV support can leave in a few turns.

Sorong Large empire counterpulse. got to the American CV hex but this time interdicted by a DE task force. The empire absolutely pulverized that task force but did not get a follow on to the CV's, which launched numerous air raids on the ships, which mostly are now at the bottom of the sea. Very exciting though. Also major empire air attacks failed.

RE: April 27, 1945 Allies lose big on surface combat

Post by topeverest »

WOW - what a total empire victory in this combat. Not one allied penetrating hit. How is that possible when combat is at 4K yards. Just horrible. Perhaps the worst surface naval combat result I have ever had. It's amazingly bad...

16 American DE's eventually sunk.
