Why does my game crash?

This is an i5, Windows 7 system with 16 GB ram. GeForce GTX 770. 2 x 1 TB drives and 1 x SSD 840. I have the game on one of the 1 TB drives. When my game gets going well, usually when things are well developed (lots of ships, etc.) the game starts crashing. The error message is long and I can't recall all of it (nor can I copy it from the screen) but it talks about an object being in use elesewhere. What's going on and how can I fix it?

Most times the game crashes, it will write a crash dump. You should find it in Documents\My Games\Distant Worlds Universe\ alongside 3 other files. This is also the spot where the save folder lives.

Do you have a 64 or 32 bit OS? That is one main question that could be relevant.
