OT: John Frost (CO 2nd batallion / 1st Para Brigade)

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

One little fact is also interesting to share. It is related to the script of the movie "a bridge to far". Frost says it is actually pretty accurate (which is nice to know) except for one part:

"I had only one adamant objection - to the treatment given to an incident when the Germans sent one of our own captured sappers back to me with a message to the effect that, as we were in such a hopeless position, would I personally meet the German commander, under a flag of truce, to discuss surrender. I said, Tell them to go to hell. Sergeant Halliwell, the sapper, replied Do I really have to go back to tell them? In answered, No it is up to you. If you would like to stay and continue fighting, they will get the message anyway. He stayed.

The film script, however, demanded that I (or rather the actor playing me) should actually meet the German general and tell him that I had no room for him or his soldiers as prisoners, and so he would have to continue fighting. Magnificent cinema, perhaps, but so divorced from reality that it was laughable.

In the end a very unsatisfactory and most unrealistic compromise was reached, in which one of 'my' officers sarcastically informed the Germans that 'we' could not accept their surrender. A few years later, when I asked Heinz Harmel, the G.O.C. of the 10th SS, what he and the Germans thought of the film, he mentioned this particular episode as being quite ridiculous."

I remember reading about this in William Goldman's book Adventures In The Screen Trade. Goldman wrote the script for A Bridge Too Far.

Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me but I seem to recall that the incident occurred, or something close to it, and Frost didn't want it in the movie as he didn't want to appear arrogant.

Like I said, I could be wrong as I read Goldman's book well over twenty years ago and anyway that was Goldman's interpretation. By the way, the actor who played Frost in A Bridge Too Far was Sir Anthony Hopkins.

I don't see how frost cold be blamed in any way. It seems to me that he was the only senior British commander that carried out his mission as intended. I don't suppose he had much say in the corps or divisional planning.
It was already too late to seize the southern end of the road bridge when they arrived and the rail bridge was blown up already.
I can see how urqhurt could reasonably be criticised. He probably should have insisted on at least one brigade dropping near their objectives even if the air force weren't keen on the idea.

Hohenstaufen and Frundsberg say maybe the failure of "Market Garden" is our fault.
