Strange Bomber Command Escort

Post by JamesM »

I am not sure if this is an issue. While reviewing the after air phase report I noticed that a couple of night raids by bomber command were being escorted by P51B-1 Mustangs and what made me notice it was the high number of German aircraft shot down during the raids. If you need a save I have saved it after the air execution phase.

The P51 Mustang had an astonishing success rate. Its ratio for kills to losses was said to have been 19 kills for every 1 Mustang lost. The P51 Mustang is credited with the destruction of 4,950 German planes – more than any other Allied fighter – and some of these kills included the jet powered Me 262.

Yes but I do not recall reading anywhere that it was used as a night fighter.

Game doesn't know about P-51, it checks for the flying settings. If it is not set to Day Only, it may include it into the night bombing stream. Performance will be very bad, so it is suggested to set all fighters w/o radars to Day Only.

Should this be set in the scenario initial setup via the editor (I am Playing the full 1943 - 45 campaign)?

They should, but I don't see any P-51 assigned to BC in 1943 GC.

Are you using AI management of airforce?

Possibly AI is assigning p51's to night escort somehow, but I think that will take Pavel to sort out.

You may upload a save if it happens. I think it could be the result of swap out.

A check of the P51B unit (56th FG) revealed that it was on 8th AF airfield. However, it was assigned to Bomber Command and given the role of a Day & Night fighter.

It does not seem to be an issue related to letting the AI manage the air force. The 56th FG is due to arrive on 17 July and when I reloaded the auto save from the beginning of that turn I found that it had been assigned to Bomber Command and given the role of a Day & Night fighter. I also reloaded the Axis auto save from the turn before, let it play and the same thing happened with the 56th FG.

I see the same thing in my latest 43 AI vs AI test, so I'll forward this on to Gary. Not sure why the 56th FG is coming in attached to Bomber Command. Thanks for the report.
