Replacements / Refit still don't feel correct

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Replacements / Refit still don't feel correct

Post by jzardos »

Unlike WitE, WitW it's incredibly frustrating to try and determine which units and why replacements are or aren't coming in. In WitE you can see what happens in Refit and Replacement from logs. WitW doesn't have this working? For a few turns my east front is only gettting 3-4k manpower a turn? Wtf? I don't see much more that 14k coming to west. I can't even find which units are getting replacements and the totals for manpower don't seem to add up.

Is there something else in the GUI that can help me here?

Also, this is really annoying.

Have 4 units (in refit) attached to a corps HQ one hex from OKW (in Berlin) with supply of 4. Berlin is a SUPPOY DEPOT 4! Last several turns, NONE of these attached units have got any replacements!!!! Can a poor ratings (which rating?) effect units getting refit replacements during supply phase?

Can we just PLEASE have a way to make sure a few units selected can be re-built? I'd actually prefer to do it manually, cause I can tell what the heck the AI routine is doing. [:(][:(][:(]

I consider this part of the game very important. Knowing where scare replacements are going and that it's working is KEY for enjoyment in this game for me.

thanks

It's difficult to provide specific advice without a save as the system is complicated. The WitW & WitE code split over 3 years ago.

I'm sure you know these but for completeness:

- Replacements move as freight so nearer to freight the better.
- For the special refit rules to apply units need to be in a depot hex - not near.
- Watch supply priority as you may get replacements but not supplies.
- You need replacements in the pools.
- What does the supply details say - accessed from the unit detail screen?
- Unlike WitE use REFIT sparingly.

jzardos, also don't forget freight = replacements. Berlin is a level 4 depot but if the corps you have the unit assigned to has a priority of 1 you likely won't get any replacements. As Red Lancer said, put unit on depot, not near, there is special code for units on refit in a depot.

There is also this factor (not sure if documented and RL can tell me if I'm wrong) but airbases short of support troops are a high priority for replacements. Look at the logistics report, if a lot of replacements are listed as support you may want to slow down on moving around air units or assigning them from the pool.

You don't mention how many units in EF box on refit? That can influence things.

Screenshots always best for moderators to help sort out.

Hope this helps.

There was a problem that was fixed in 1.00.07 where units in refit in depots were getting replacements during the enemy turn, and these didn't show up in the log report. As the others stated, the sure way to get replacements in a unit is to put the unit in refit on a depot with freight (national supply source will guarantee that). If you have lots of units in refit mode in depots, then you can't say which is going to get the manpower first. If you only put one or two units a turn in to this situation, unless the East Front is in very bad shape, you should get the 1 or 2 units sucking up the available manpower. After the bug fix in 1.00.07 the log report of replacements going to the west and the east should be working. If you see that it looks like it's not working, let us know, ideally with a pre-save so we can repeat the logistics phase and see why it's not working.
All understanding comes after the fact.

ok thanks Joel, will try this. My Corps HQ did have a supply priority of 4, but it was on the depot and the units were one hex away on rail.
