WitW hotfix 1.00.08 - get it here

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Baelfiin I followed these instructions but still have version 1.00.07 showing?

When I click on Update I am told I have the latest version.

When you run the game, you should see the following on the bottom right of the main menu:

Version Installed 1.00.07
Exe File Version 1.00.08
Windows 11 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 26300) (26100.ge_release.240331-1435) 26H2 26300.9550

The version info shown on the game window title (in windowed mode) is read from the Windows registry and is repeated as "Version installed" in the main menu. Exe version is the version actually reported from the game executable.

How do I unzip? When I double click on the file it just opens another one, WarinTheWest which is shown as an application. When I double click on this I get the error message about the serial number. I appreciate your help, but this is very frustrating.

Don't double click on that application. That's the file you need to copy and paste as described above. It's NOT an installation file that walks you through anything. Just put it where it belongs and then start up WITW normally.

You are getting the license error because you are trying to run it and it's not in the proper directory.

Well, having wasted a morning on this I am giving up for now. Could someone explain to me why updates are issued in different ways? Why wasn't this issued as a patch that could have been updated through the newly installed update facility? Still haven't had an answer to my question about when the next update might be. Realise this is a Sunday morning (UK time) but that's what happens when you drop something like this out on a Saturday night.

First, thanks to all of you that jumped in and helped those having problems unzipping the update. Gary and I have our own technical difficulties at times so we fully appreciate how hard it can be to navigate through an unfamiliar process.

I can answer your question about why updates are issued in different ways. Matrix personnel create and maintain the program that installs the game on your computer (the installer). They also update this periodically as we, 2by3 personnel, provide changes to the game files. Matrix has to work rebuilding the installer into their schedule, and they are generally very responsive, especially when there is a major issue that requires a quick fix. However, Matrix traditionally shuts down during the holidays for several weeks. So during this time each year we sometimes find it's worth posting a hotfix file that does not use the installer. We realize this will not be as easy to use, but we all feel it's better to provide it and hope that we and especially the forum community will be able to help people having trouble using the file. It's possible that someone from Matrix will be able to get into the office during the break and update the installer, but there's no guarantee as there are only a few individuals that are in a position to work on the installer and they are on their holiday break now.

The reality of this situation is that since we released so close to the holiday break (December 4, and we needed every last day to get the game ready by then), we only had 2 weeks before the break to get the first forum feedback about the game, write code to address issues, and test it. Going from much less than 100 users to over 1000 users virtually overnight meant we had many new reports of things to look at. Unfortunately one of the reports led to a change that looked ok in our tests, but in reality could cause some major issues. We didn't discover this until after the 1.00.07 went out and Matrix went on break, thus the hotfix. We don't plan on making another update until January, but we will try to react if something serious comes up. We appreciate your understanding.

You'll find attached a zip file containing a hotfix exe patch file 1.00.08. We have found that bombing empty airfields starting with version 1.00.07 can cause a crash or data corruption. This new exe fixes this potentially critical bug. We suggest that anyone that is playing with 1.00.07 download this file and manually unzip the exe file.

Unzip the exe file into the \Matrix Games\Gary Grigsby's War in the West folder on your computer.

When you run the game, you should see the following on the bottom right of the main menu:

Version Installed 1.00.07
Exe File Version 1.00.08

For those of you that have not yet updated to 1.00.07, you need to do this first before you unzip the 1.00.08. When you use the 1.00.08 version and go to the Multiplayer screen, ignore the message that there is a newer version available (you have it). Once there is an official installer available and you use it, you won't get the message.

Sorry for this inconvenience. If you have any difficulty downloading or unzipping the file, please let us know here. Thanks for your ongoing support.
I just purchased.So I only need 1.00.08?Do I need 1.00.07?

You need 1.00.07 first. The hotfix only corrects the patch, it doesn't replace it.

You need to install the 1.00.07 update first, then unzip the hotfix 1.00.08 as discussed in this thread.
