Night bombing vs mapower

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Night bombing vs mapower

Post by wosung »

Post patch 1943 Wallies grand campaign, FOW on:

It seems that Bomber Command (BC) is more able to hit economical targets than manpower. This would be just the opposite than RL

This is just one example below:

BC doctrine

The fates have to have their say. That many bombers have a good chance of hitting something.

That many bombers have a good chance of hitting something. When they miss.

Is it like this every turn? Manpower may be figured differently.

Do you have FOW on?

If you are targeting manpower make sure your loadout is set to incendiaries which do more damage to manpower.

Thank you very much.

What about making incendiaries the default loadout for BC at night?

I think they are the default but I know 'Cookies' do seem tempting.

Just a small note. Industries such as vehicles, AFVs, and such are concentrated in a small area. Manpower, on the other hand, is spread across many square km/mi (take your pick). Unless you fire storm the entire city and its surrounding area, you will not have a chance at 100% damage. The Nuke loadout will take care of that for you.

There are very heavy modifiers against night bombing accuracy of non-manpower targets.

Thank you Pavel.
So, then it's a FOW issue that 4 out of 5 air directive summaries above suggest that non-manpower targets have been hit harder by BC at night than manpower targets?

Red Lancer,
you were right, most of the BC heavy bombers do use the incendiary loadout by default. And I didn't change that at all.

Carlkay58,
I didn't expect nuking manpower. Just more impact by what are nearly 1000 bomber raids at 18k ft. Like those big raids of summer/autumn 1943 IRL.

You have to take into account the difference between the targets.

Suppose you have two factories in a hex (= HI) and you destroy one : you have 50% dammage on HI in that hex with only a few hits, but that's something that can be repaired in a few weeks.

Now let's get back to manpower... Here's the results from operation Gomorrah, the bombing of Hamburg in summer 1943, taken from Wikipedia :
Operation Gomorrah killed 42,600 people, left 37,000 wounded and caused some one million German civilians to flee the city.[3] The city's labour force was reduced permanently by ten percent.[3] Approximately 3,000 aircraft were deployed, 9,000 tons of bombs were dropped and over 250,000 homes and houses were destroyed.

So, one of the biggest combined ops of BC and 8th AF during one-game turn got 10% "damage" on Hamburg (some of them going to other cities). Here, if I take your screenshots from turn 5 only, you have +8%, +6% and +5% on Cologne. Now, that's some very big hit against manpower !

One thing I'm more doubtful in the engine is how fast manpower can be repaired :
TYPE OF FACTORY
REPAIR RATE
PER TURN
Oil, Resource 1%
heavy Industry, Synthetic fuel, fuel 2%
Armament, vehicle, manpower, Aircraft and Afv/Combat vehicle, Port, Railyard 3%
v-weapon Sites 5%

3% per turn, that's ok to simulate the disruption but seems weak to simulate permanent losses. That means 10% damage can be "repaired" totally in a little more than 3 weeks. Seems a bit quick to me.

I noticed in your turn 7 screenshot that Bomber command only attacked one of the 3 "bomb city" objectives. It seems like all the aircraft attack the first target. I've seen the same thing - is this something the allies should be concerned about? Is there a way to ensure more than one target is attacked?

Hard to tell. It could be FOW, but it also can be real damage. Even non-manpower targets have strong target miss modifiers, it still can hit hard in case rolls passed. You can upload your save to support forum, so I could look at it. Thanks.
