Paratroopers 2nd SNLF

Post by colt6900 »

This is for technical support, most likely?

Yokosuka 2nd. SNLF is not designated as a paratrooper unit, Yokosuka 1st. and 3rd. are present in the game
as paratroopers but the second is shown as traditional marines. According to what I've read in history,
The second Naval Landing force was also created in 1941 as paratroopers. It would be nice to have them
in that status, if for no other reason than to be accurate.

I believe I remember some discussion of this somewhere and the 2nd SNLF was a paratrooper unit on paper, but never completed the paratrooper training, or something like that.

This is not a software bug. This sub forum is for game software bugs and game hardware problems. OOB issues are handled either in the sticky on land OOB which is located on the main AE forum, or simply as a new thread there.

In any case, as mentioned by wdolson who is one of the devs, the 2nd SNLF "paradrop" issue was previously discussed. This 2009 thread:

tm.asp?m=2208148&mpage=1&key=snlf%2Cparatroop

comprehensively dealt with the issue and conclusively settled the matter.

The unit is properly represented in the AE OOB. Wiki sources are wrong and should never be relied upon without some other corroborating source. It is a poor historian who does not cross reference his sources.

From what I've read, they just didn't do a combat jump, but did fight as regular snlf to defend the homeland?

But history just like Japanese paperwork was not completed accurately.

Did you actually read the linked thread I provided?  From there the following conclusions re the 2nd SNLF are obvious.

1.  It did not even train as paratroopers.  It had zero, zilch, nada capability to paradrop.
2.  It was never used in a paradrop.
3.  It wasn't stationed in the Home Islands in the 1943-45 time period to defend the homeland.
4.  Almost everything written in English about the unit is just plain wrong and made up.  The problem lies not with the Japanese sources but with the lack of quality Western researchers on Japanese society.  One person gets something wrong and it snowballs as subsequent researches just adopt that erroneous position rather than doing their own primary research.

The 1st Yokosuka SNLF (Special Naval Landing Force) was formed 20 September 1941, at Yokosuka Naval District, round a battalion of 520 paratroopers, this force had taken Menado as part of the Sasebo Raiding Force. The 2nd Yokosuka also formed at the Yokosuka port area, 15 October 1941, with 746 men and trained as such, took no part in any airborne operations and became an island defensive base unit. The 3rd Yokosuka, again formed at the Naval facility consisting of 849 men on 20 November 1942, was used as marine infantry through the Philipines and two months later was involved in the Dutch West Timor invasion as airborne inserted infantry originating from the captured air base at Kendari.

BUT, I believe the unit was disbanded and later reformed and sent to Nauru.

All such "sources" were fully discredited in the 2009 thread.  Just because something is written does not mean it is correct.  This is particularly the case when one is dealing only with secondary sources.

I cant see a one word answer without explanation as a valid source.

Where did Taki get his info from, can it be verified?

What has been put forward to disprove any of the information?

I think its quite likely that it was intended that 2nd Yoko was to be para trained. What happened is unknown, maybe the para trained men were used to fill out 1st & 3rd Yoko??

Best part of this game is that if you want, you can edit the data and make the unit para capable if you want. As oft spouted, this is a game, not a simulation[;)][;)]

JeffK: Read "Rikugan" by Leland Ness: He covers the issue adequately.
