upgrading and downgrading units?

Post by jnpoint »

I can see under CR that aircrafts can be upgraded. But where do I upgrade ground units? And where do I downgrade units?

Upgrading ground units are automatically done by the AI when a new TOE is available for the unit.

So if there after a while isn't enough new parts for this new type, then the AI will downgrade automatically too? I ask because I can see in the manual page 193 that I can downgrade if I run out of a certain type of equipment.

I believe you have to have Upgrades set to AUTO for that to occur

All ground equipment upgrades, downgrades and substitutions are handled automatically. My understanding, and please anyone correct me if wrong as the logic and methodology has changed over time in WitE and WitW. Sometimes there are substitutions. Some weapons may not be used in any official TOE but if available will be substituted. For example, I don't believe the SturmPanzer IV is organic to any unit but if player short of StuH42's it might be substituted in the heavy assault gun slot by the computer.

Likewise, if production pool short of 75mm anti-tank guns that the unit TOE calls for rather than having no anti-tank guns the computer may substitute the 50mm anti-tank gun which would be a downgrade from the 75mm.

This is a great feature of the game especially with reference to armor units. This allows the Germans to have as many tanks as possible in the panzer divisions even if they are not the best tanks to be had.
