Combat Value question

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Combat Value question

Post by jnpoint »

If I look at:

"3/Hermann Goering Panzer Division" it has right now (in my game)a Combat Value of: 2.70/13.98

But the supply is almost 100%, It's placed on a Depot on priority 4. It has 100% in all things except for CS Tank, where it is 60% (misses 2 out of 5) But why is the CV then only 2.70?

I've wondered this too. Some of the CV's seem really low compared to toe, etc. It's winter in my game now, so mud may make it worse? Be interested to see the answer

In Italy in late February '44 (constant snow/rain), everybody's CV is very low in my GC. That seems right.

Is it a regiment and not the full division?

If it has III in the combat unit square on the map it is a regiment. An XX is a division.

It has a III. I can see where you are going. Shouldn't the name change from Panzer Division to Panzer Regiment?

It's a regiment then. The name is division because it's part of that division. The reason it is 3/Hermanm means that it is the 3rd regiment of that division. You need to find 1 & 2, and put them in the same hex as 3 and press "b" when they all have movement points. They will stack into 1 unit then which will be just a "division" instead of "3/division" and next turn it will have full CV.

Well I am just watching Poirot and love to see him solve mysteries. I myself find a lot of mysteries in this game, but at the end of the day, there are no mysteries I just didn.t understand what was obvious to other players :)

Btw my REGIMENT! has been set to refit for more than 3 weeks and has still not received a single CS Tank (to out of five has been destroyed). Is there a delay I have to take into calculation?

There has to be one available in the pool and the distance from a depot (that is stocked with freight) will impact the unit in REFIT.

A last one. If the unit is divided into three regiments should it not have about 4-5 CV then at 100%?

Yes, if the unit is in supply, has full TOE, and is at near zero fatigue and hasn't moved. It should be 1/3 of the full CV of the larger unit. The weather also impacts this, so it would have to be clear. Also, press shift-U to make sure it's not being interdicted by enemy planes.

I was also wondering why my German motorized divisions remained at low CVs, until I discovered the supply priority in their corps HQ. Put them on a depot, in refit mode, set that priority to 4 and in a few turns the HG division had a CV of 20!

It is in refit, on a depot with priority 4 and the HQ is also on priority 4. Clear weather and average roads. Interdicted by enemy planes (3)
