AI post-sicily is not being smart with their plane deploymen.

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

So I have taken Sicily and preparing to invade Italy. The Germans keep stacking their planes up across the straight of Messina at hex 156,285. I keep sending my strategic Air Force to smash them, they keep putting in new planes. In short order I'm pretty capable of badly depleting the German air force. I've reloaded this part 3 times as I am new and learn more mechanics to play the game better. Anyways, this is the AI's behavior 2 out of the three times, but one of the three times they pull their planes back farther. Still, seems to me the AI should be more wary of stacking airfields that have been bombed previously.

Turn it on challenging, the AI gets better the harder you set it.

Are you sure? I thought it just got better stats on it's units, while ours got worse

It would be nice to have a smarter AI without improving the stats altogether.

Does harder difficulties have better AI? I'm just so used to unrealistic buffs being the determiner for "harder" difficulties.

When you change the game difficulty settings the AI (if harder than Normal) will gain a percentage advantage while the Human will lose a percentage of various categories. This makes the AI harder because it looks at its stats / supply situation / combat values / etc. (all of which have probably been changed) and compares it to what it knows of its human opponent. Decisions are then based on these ratios. The AI will get more aggressive and take more risks if the ratios are more in its favor. The general rule of thumb for AI balance is to have the difficulty set to Challenging (110 AI vs 90 Human) for a 'balanced' game.
