Old 88mm Sound?

Post by DonCzirr »

Pretty much everything about the recent game updates is great ... except the new firing sound for the Tigers.

Remembering back to the old Talonsoft version, the 88s had this high velocity sounding effect that set them apart from the Mark IVs and Panthers.

Is it possible somehow to enable just that one sound effect and keep everything else?

Or is it more of an "All or nothing" situation?

Hello DC!

Yes, the weapon and movement sounds were altered to MCS 2.0x as explained in Developer Diary #1

fb.asp?m=3473197

I am not at my computer, but I believe Tiger's 88 main gun is either category 11 or 12. You can open the German Platoon01.oob and check to make sure.

Then, copy your favorite sound file from your TS or 1.04 install and place here, rename if necessary. Remember to copy also the explosion sound if you want that too.

Remember to check SOUNDS.DAT if the number of sound file variants changed.

This sounds a bit complex but it really is not. Give it a try [:)]

Finally, you might try to install your files as a JSGME enabled mod. In that case, you can move back to your vanilla install by a click of a mouse. Just include the new weapon and explosion files plus sounds.dat in the mod folder.

Thanks Crossroads.

Sounds like it may be worth while to uninstall, reinstall to base Matrix version / copy all original files to another dir / upgrade to 2.X and then use the copied files to pick and choose from the old set.

Sounds like it will take a little time to implement but given what I am seeing these days, this game series has come back to life and is worth the investment.

Best Regards,
Don

Hello Don,

I am at my computer now. I indeed replaced the Category 12 weapon sounds, there's five of them: 12weapon[0-4].wav. I compared these to my MCS 1.04 install, and the five files are different.

But since there's five of them under both versions, all you need to do is to copy them from 1.04 into 2.02 and that's it. No other changes or modifications necessary.

Or, as you suggested: I don't have a base MCS 1.00 install at my disk at the moment, it could be very well that the five files in 1.04 are already there in 1.00 / 1.01.

So while patching to 2.02, stop after the base install, put the sound files aside, and replace the ones in 2.02 as you please.

Appreciate the continued guidance Crossroads ....

When just replacing the 0 - 4 OGG files, it seemed that I got the old piercing, high velocity sound only every 1 out of 4 or 5 times ....

I then got heavy-handed and clobbered the whole directory with all OGG files from my default EF2 install repository.

From then on, it took on a nice rotation, alternating with the low velocity sound.

So, as it stands ... back up to date .... high velocity 88s back in action and able to run the game in a Window with all the new bells and whistles ...

I added to my Diary #1 details how to have only the sounds you want there: LINK. Hope it helps [:)]
