Allied amphibious TFs are immdeiately re-routed from Chaochow to Hong Kong and fighters are staged into to cover the buildup.
Allied armor pursues the retreating Japanese north up the coast and invests Tsinkiang this turn. Allied medium and tac bombers soften up the defenses at Tsinkiang and an assault will be launched here as soon as the supporting infantry arrives.
The 150,000 strong IJA stack hunkered down in the forest 2 hexes E of Canton is carpet bombed daily and now Allied troops are beginning to mass in the hex for the final assault in about a week or so.
The noose continues to tighten around the remaining Japanese troops trapped in the Canton pocket.
FIFTH FLEET: ACTION IN THE NORTH PACIFIC
Allied carrier bombers city bomb oil at Muroran and resources at Toyohara, Sapporo and Kushiro. The Allies amass another thousand strategic points and Japan has now suffered the loss of 23,424 strategic points.
Dave left a CAP trap over Sapporo and sweeping F4U-1Ds didnt arrive until after the fact(as usual) so the Allies had 155 TBM-3s butchered over the target. The TBM-3 losses dont matter so much(except for the points) but the loss of 155 skilled TB pilots really hurts.
The strategic bombing of Japan via carriers didnt work as I had expected since you have to approach within 8 hexes to spot a target. This opened us up to a counterstrike by Japanese kamikaze daitais:

Two of the CVEs are lightly damaged and will be forced to return to port for a couple of weeks but CVE Cape Esperance is more heavily damaged and will need to go back to Pearl Harbor for repairs that should take the better part of 2 months. Counting the TBM-3s and the kamikaze losses the Allies lose 185 AC in A2A combat this turn vs Japanese losses of 182 AC. Interestingly.... the air groups from CVE Cape Esperance staged into Russian AFs when they landed so I need to see if I can still move them or if they are "interned".
Since the Allied carriers need to approach within 8 hexes of their target to launch a city attack.... and I dont want to expose the Allied carriers to massed Japanese land based bombers.... it will be necessary to destroy the Japanese land based air forces(if that is even possible) before attempting to use carrier bombers for strategic bombing. So the Allied carriers will now be used to attrition the Japanese land based air forces. I lost a lot of TBs over Sapporo.... and the carrier air groups need to be re-organized again.... so its time to head back to port.
I had converted the TOE of the CVEs and CVs to carry as many torpedo bombers as possible so that we could inflict the maximum amount of city bombing damage. But now that we are going to attempt to attrition the Japanese land based air forces.... fighters become more of a priority than TBs so its time once again to re-organize the air groups.
JAPAN INC. VS IWO JIMA
Iwo Jima is the Allies most forward airbase and consequently it is the most exposed. The Iwo Jima based sweepers had exacted a heavy toll on front line Japanese fighters so Dave decided that he had to do something about this mortal threat.
I had over 40 subs stacked 5 hexes deep around the northern 180 degrees of Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima itself was covered by over over 50 PT boats 400 mines and all the sweepers were staged out of the AF there and were replaced with CAP fighters and B-25 naval bombers.
Well Dave didnt send in his bombers to neutralize Iwo Jima..... he sent in the IJN.
First came the E boats and DDs to neutralize the PT boats and they cut through the Allied sub defenses like a hot knife through butter:

The Allies lose 37 AC destroyed on the ground and the level 4 AF at Iwo Jima now has 17% runway and 78% service damage. A fresh fighter squadron is staged into Iwo Jima as well as another naval bomber squadron. I obviously cant defend Iwo Jima against the IJN without the help of the Allied carriers so there wont be any more sideshows in the north Pacific or strategic bombing via carriers until we deal with both the IJN and the land based Japanese air forces.
I guess that Im really surprised that the Allied subs and PT boats were so ineffectual this turn. I had about 20 DDs and cruisers standing by with AOs 8 hexes to the SE of Iwo Jima. Im forming 3 surface TFs to try to engage the IJN DDs and E boats in the waters around the Bonins next turn.
