Simply asked if they would like an article like that. They said yes and rest is history [:)]

I also wrote another one for them titled 'Queen of the Pacific' about War in the Pacific AE that you may like as well.

Of course it really helped that I could point them to this document about understanding Japan's production system in AE http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3329605

For some reason this really impressed the heck out of them [:)]

You wouldn't belive how long it took the betatesters to convince Steve to:

1) Allow for any automated inital convoy set up.
2) Change his display size so the betatesters could download a playable MWiF.
3) Not ro assume everyone was going to have 2 monitors when playing MWiF.

The best thing about these forums is that there are multiple set ups listed for each country in:

The War Room > Strategy Discussions

I love Numydydar's idea here: tm.asp?m=3778997 perhaps there would have to be too many sample setups to capture everyone's tastes, but I would nit mind at all to start with someone else's ideas and see how it goes

Your right quick start is not real good but it was designed by someone in Matrix so that players could start the minute they opened their new game box, you know there is people around like that [;)] Some people who shall remain nameless [&:] must be doing a new setup every night, I would think that one setup would last, hmmm maybe a week[:D] or possibly a lot longer depending on the time you can spare too play this game.

Bo

the setup and scrap quick starts were done by me.. they were meant to be universal. so you are right they don´t fit every strategy .

making save games after setup is almost impossible because of the million option combinations.

Sorry michael was not being that critical and they are good to have, I just cant handle the carriers turning into planes but that is not your fault as I know you had to use basic rules for newbies, my apologies for my bad comment.

Bo

yes the default setup is made with minimal options. but everybody can make their own setup save game, with what ever option they like..

and if you like I can make a setup save game with what ever options you like

and i did not take offends
the wif rulebook is my bible

I agree with the OP, particularly about convoy and production set up, which I dread.

Yes, I agree. You can save games all you want. I don't see what the issue is.

Hi 76mm, do you use the global map for the convoy setup, it makes it a lot easier IMO

You can't used saved games if you want to start clean games with each new patch.

Bo, I use the global map but it is of limited utility, because the real problem for me is trying to understand where all of the convoys should be allocated to ensure that there are no bottlenecks, etc.

Why not?

Edit: I surmise we may have different understandings here of what you mean by "clean". But if you started a game and set-up all the units and then saved it (FREX in Global War, right after the message that Germany DoW'd Poland), then that saved game ought to be re-useable.

The saves should be usable going forward as patches come out. However, it most likely will not work under earlier versions. Or if it does work, then you have the issues that are present in the previous versions [:(]

Did you watch Steve's video tutorial #14 on convoys and bringing in resources to each nation in the game? It is well worth your time to watch it, I think it explains clearly the problem you are having with bottlenecks and other matters pertaining to this supply and convoy system.

I've loaded a game which was saved from version 0.99.3 just a week ago which is now working quite well in the latest patch.

What might happen is that a mad except occurs. Simply ignore that one and continue the game. It will run without any problems.

However, if I than save that game and play it using 0.99.3 patch, than it won't work (which is logical, since we are using 1.3.2.0 now, and why would you want to play MWIF using an obsolete version of it...).

Yeah, I think a game saved at that point would be usable, but I was concerned that any flaws in the saved game would carry over into newer versions of the game and thus make it harder to tell what has already been fixed in the newer version--or it that not really an issue?

I did watch it, and it is useful, but sadly I haven't internalized all of the lessons after watching it. I seem to recall that there is a printed optimized convoy set up (ie, showing how many convoys in each area) somewhere--does anyone recall where it is?

not really - only in two cases this can happen:

1. The save game was internally damaged because of a bug
2. when Steve has to change internal variables

The latter happened when Steve tackled production bugs, and reported the case where that would happen in the release notes.

I actually still use a lot of the older gamesaves to test if newer versions of the mwif.exe has a particular bug fixed. When I tested supply, and especially the Bermuda Triangle supply bugs, I used them as well to retest on regression problems. Worked very well.

Saved games from previous versions should run fine with more recent versions. There are a couple of exceptions: a bug in restoring games saved during Production that couldn't be repaired. The program reports that problem when you restore the game - if you run across it.

Every time there is a change in the format for how a game is saved (i.e., written out to disk), I write support code when the game is restored to handle games saved using earlier versions as well as games using the most recent version. It's not that difficult to do and it provides compatibility for all the saved games from earlier versions. I have thousands of saved games from over a hundred different program versions over the years that I use for testing. So I have a very serious personal investment in making sure this all works correctly.
