division stranded on ships on Elbe river

Post by wpurdom »

I sent the 106th division from outside Brest to Brest and then to Hamburg by naval move and it stopped at the first land square on the river. The next move it could not be moved or unloaded off of the ships.

The next turn I attempted to send the XXII Corps HQ from Brest to Hamburg and it stopped on top of the 106th division. I am attaching the save before the divisional move and the save at the beginning of the next turn.

This is before move

Are there any land, or flak units near the river? If there are, your going to have to push them back to free that Amphipb HQ. That happens in Holland and the Netherlands and it's because of the enemy forces on the river stopping your movement. I can't recall the rule off the top of my head. And you have to clear both sides of the river, not just one side.

At the beginning of the first turn there were two hexes north of the Elbe which were occupied by German units. They either surrendered or were routed before I moved attempted to move the division to Hamburg. It's not unreasonable that they had to pause under the circumstances at the mouth of the river, and it's in one of those hexes that the division wound up stopping.

On the next turn, when the division was stranded (couldn't move in naval mode or get out of naval mode) and the HQ was hung up moving from Brest to Hamburg, there wasn't a German ZOC or occupied hex within ten hexes. It may be that the HQ hung up because the division was already hung up on the first land hex going up the river.

Using your turn 34 save, I can't get the unit to move to that hex along the river. If you can use that save and duplicate it and get me a save where I can follow a specific set of steps to get the unit stuck in the river that would be great. Once the unit is stuck in the river hex I can understand why the code might fail and not allow it to get out. I tried several ways to get the unit to move on turn 34 but none would go up the river. I assume you must have removed all of the enemy units from the hexsides adjacent to the river and I tried doing that but still couldn't get a unit to move. Looks like you will be in Berlin soon so it won't matter much.
All understanding comes after the fact.

I have attached a file from which you should be able to click on the division near the mouth of the Elbe in naval mode, place the cursor over Hamburg showing 20+ hexes to spare to move there and then attach to move it and strand it. I moved a cav and a division from Brest to Hamburg. In my first time through I moved a cav and a division elsewhere first.

I believe the problem is relating to another aspect of the game engine. When you are moving troops to a port and out on ships to the limit of capacity, frequently on the last unit to move the ships will run out of gas and stop mid-ocean short of where the cursor shows they can go.

To duplicate from the original save, I believe the following steps will work:

1. Clear out the Germans north of the Elbe.
2. Move the cav group and one of the divisions outside of Brest by naval move to anywhere.
3. Move the final division into Brest and towards Hamburg using enough segments in the move to get you to the mouth of the Elbe on a least-hexes course.
4. Put the cursor over Hamburg - it should show twenty-odd hexes to spare in getting there.
5. Click to try to move into Hamburg.
