Surprise 1st Turn AI Russian Play in 43 Campaign

Post by vandorenp »

Have been exploring the scenario and was shocked by Russian 1st turn play.

All I did for the German 1st turn is run Air Superiority AI and then ended turn. The Russians attacked at the Western and Southwestern edges of the Kursk Salient and in so doing left five open paths through Russian lines. Two on the western most of the salient and three in front of the SS Korps and associated Panzer Korps. I realize that freezing the line units will put a stop to this. However, ought the AI have some basic logic to not leave open lines anywhere?

I've just played this as the Soviets vs the Axis AI and the Axis AI withdrew a number of divisions along the southern edge of the northern salient during turn 1, but left the divisions along the northern edge in place - all on their own with their rear exposed and a huge gap in the line...

Even at this late stage, the AI appears to be unable to consistently form a line of units on the map, without a gap.

Had not thought to try the other way around. Have to wonder how the AI overlooks integrity of the line.

the scenario starts off with a huge portion of the German line frozen. I have modified the scenario so the Axis units in the line are not frozen thus allowing the player all strategic possibilities. This is only playable against a human player. Need to make one where Soviet units are frozen such that the AI will not make irrational holes in the line. Don't think that works for any scenario for the offensive side.

This screenshot is actually from the 44-45 scenario. I'm playing as the SU vs the Axis AI.

You can see here that the AI pulls back some units to reform the front line, but just leaves others hanging in space.

Also, when it reforms the line, it pulls back several hexes, which is rather a-historical. I think the AI should be forced to reform the line within 1-2 hexes of the original line, otherwise breakthroughs and encirclements become almost impossible to achieve and all the SU has to do is to push the Axis forces to the western map edge.
