Umboi is a key base for advancing up the coast. You will need it.

PS. Unless something changed or my memory is failing me the dot base North of Lae can be built up to size 9. Only that one and Hansa Bay that can be built up all the way. You will need one of the two at level 9 if going up the coast like I did.

In general plan your invasions after where the level 9 fields are. They are very scarce going North from here. And while it might be hard to imagine now one of your biggest problems will be finding room for your planes. Especially the 4Es. [:)]

Yeah, it's the one up the yellow road from Lae, called Nadzab, that can go to a level 9. North of Madang Hansa Bay also can go to a level 9. Also Buna can, which is very lightly defended. I agree these are precious and I'll go for them hard.

Image

Yep, it is all about those level 9 bases. Nazdab is pretty much a dagger, (broadsword) in the heart of any defensive position that lies in fighter range of it. Hansa is another key point but you need not control both to own that whole region. Control one or the other and Rabaul is useless to Japan.

Watch it with "air field damage". Its not runway damage showing but for some crazy reason its air BASE damage. [8|] Who the fudge cares about base damage??? Which means the fields are already open there since it repairs the runway before starting on the base...

Took a while for me to figure that out through the help of a poster in my AAR (BBfanboy?).

It....depends. I think. So far as I can tell, "airbase hits" are the ones that damage the Service line in the base screen. Runway hits are obviously runway.

I have many a raid that hit Runway almost entirely, but also many others that are about half and half...

I think it's an average also, however you could have 100% Service damage and a completely open Runway at Airfield 50... Basically, unless it says 75+, I don't consider something closed.

I am doing H2H gaming and I know for sure that the Intel on a base shows Airfield service damage, not runway damage. Furthermore, non-engineer troops can help repair runway damage so it repairs much faster than anything else. This makes sense for a dirt field, but once you start getting hard surface fields it really should take equipment to repair.
The airfield service damage affects the maintenance of aircraft and the ability to put together a coordinated strike. You just can't "bomb up" a lot of strike aircraft without facilities and equipment. And the service crews need their teakettle/coffeepot too! [:)]

I had thought that even with an open runway and groups there flying CAP, the CAP would be weakened by low morale and getting tons of ops losses from coming out of a damaged base. That doesn't seem to be the case always.

It's too bad if the service damage shows up more the recon, as in a real situation it's pretty easy to see a messed up field in a photo, but not so easy to see whether the crews could service the planes. In fact from a book I just read about Medmenham the photo interpreters could tell if a field had intentional (false) damage inflicted by the user to appear as if it were closed (or not repaired) when in fact it was operational.

What i even notice is that very often even rebasing squadron to base with damaged service/runway facilities gives immediate morale reduction. I also believe how much morale is reduced depend of unit lieder skills, presence of HQ and how much AF is damaged.

If AF have 100% service damaged You cant repair planes. According to manual 1/3 of planes flying CAP end day with damage(not always big enough to send plane to maintenance). If You don`t manage to repair service fast after few days You will end with bunch of damaged planes and squadrons with low morale

I also what to confirm that intel show service facilities damage so base with operational runway is shown as 100% damaged

This is what I've experienced too, these reductions in morale flying from damaged bases and the accumulation of more inoperable planes than usual.

I'm doing a few tests on recon and damaged bases, and so far the results are interesting. (I want to run more for a better sample but I was interrupted by a turn). [:)]

I'll try to get some up here soon.

March 29 - 31, 1943
SUBS: Skipjack hits another xAK near Ceylon, but no troops on board. Pampano has a run-in with an xAKL on the surface near Fukue-Jima and hits it with a bunch of small arms fire, then takes a 12cm short gun hit and submerges. She's got about 12 service and 8 flat damage, but I'll keep her running around over there.

INDIA: Strikes on ground forces fly on the 29th but airfield strikes are again grounded by weather. There is a division at Trin that was at Colombo. Same on the 30th, which gave me the jitters along with the approaching CV TF, so I just ran sweeps on the 31st. Good thing as Nick was able to move 250 fighters back into Trincomalee. Our sweeps got a slight advantage, and with service troubles there I'm sure there are a lot of damaged planes around, but I'm not going to risk anything else with another 500-700 fighters at Madras able to move in.

CENT PAC: Preparing for some moves by getting troops reorganized and opening up some space on bases, getting units put together again and lots of little details.

SO PAC: After the air strike on the surface forces in So Pac the 29th turns into an active night and day. First, the IJN DDs go right in for the injured and hit Leander and two DDs, the only unscathed ships from the day before, guarding Shortlands. The Allied ships fight hard, although outnumbered, and it looks like the IJN should lose the Yuzuki and the Allies did lose the Lardner to a long lance.

Four of the IJN DDs continued on to find the damaged Canberra, which also fought them off after taking two hits. It then limped back toward Tulagi.

The next wave of Allied ships showed up behind the IJN, hitting Buin with a good bombardment, destroying a few fighters and getting some good damage on the fields. They then run into two IJN DDs, the Shimakaze and Tamanami, and likely sink the Shimakaze, which is great as she's a very good ship.

Later Judys arrived and went for the two damaged USN DDs, getting under LR CAP and sinking both. This I didn't see during the turn due to a sync bug, so I had thought it was a decent day. That turned it a bit sour. It also looks like the CA Cornwall is not going to fight off the fires. They went up into th e40s and damage continued to accumulate in port. There is a bit of naval support here, but unfortunately I don't have more to be able to fly in. I fear the worst.

CHINA: Kunming still holds after two more assaults on the 29th and the 31st.

I've decided to try to get supply to far Western China and bring troops there to rehabilitate and potentially grow, upgrade and prepare for the endgame, rather than simply letting them starve and fade away. Kashgar is in range of India and I need now to build the base on each side once supply starts to flow. I have a Corps moving from Urumchi to get started. This will take a good long time, but is the only hope to save some of the Chinese army from becoming recycling Zombie troops garnering continual VPs for the Japanese.

OZ: Troops are reaching Cunerdin and will get to Perth soon. No sign of evac for the units here. One of the units is an air HQ, and I'll try to win Perth and then let it rot rather than letting him buy it back immediately. We'll see if it will actually retreat or just surrender.

RECON and AIRFIELD DAMAGE
Here are three days of recon from both sides. I have more and I'm putting it together slowly. Interesting that although the info is almost useless as the damage is higher on the base, the field damage is reported almost exactly on the 2nd, while the service damage remains and the port damage is off significantly.

I think it just goes to show that even with DL 9/10, you can't know everything. Notice that on the 3rd day, it shows lower numbers for both runway and port, and port is the last thing to fix - so it's definitely not down to 75.

April 1 - 3, 1943
INDIA: All is as predicted. The fields at Trincomalee were packed well over their actual capacity with 700+ fighters and some ASW panes on April 1. The CVs shepherded some TFs to Madras and Trin, hanging out between.

The Irving-S shows up for the first time at Trincomalee on the 2nd as I try to get some hits on the overstacked airframes at night. The 4Es aren't much affected by the two planes and net about 10 planes on the ground. I also notice that suddenly NOTHING is in Madras anymore! Only two small units, engineers or base forces show up in our bombardment. Hats off to Nick for a very well orchestrated pull-out there. Not much I could have done to stop it. Still, the air campaign at Ceylon had more than the desired affect in getting the Japanese to also abandon Madras. Finally, at last we can concentrate on NE India and move toward China, I hope.

Looks like the division and maybe some AA move out of Trincomalee as well. No fighters are there on the 3rd, just a few Jakes left over. Massive strikes will hit the base on the 4th and I'll paradrop Jaffna, Koggola and Male.

In the NE Patna is abandoned as is Ranchi. Tentative moves forward are starting but I must be wary of the 800+ fighters and 100+ bombers in Calcutta now.

SO PAC: Georges take advantage of the LR CAP around Munda and we lose 9 Wildcats and a few Beaufighters for about 2-3 N1K1-J. Not much I can do agains them yet, but soon ti'll be more than a fair fight.

CHINA: At last Kunming falls.

OZ: Tanks should enter Perth tomorrow. I'll attack once over 200AV are in the base in a few days.

I think it just goes to show that even with DL 9/10, you can't know everything. Notice that on the 3rd day, it shows lower numbers for both runway and port, and port is the last thing to fix - so it's definitely not down to 75.

Yeah, one thing I've noticed is that certain days recon is just out of whack. Others much more consistent. All points to the unreliability of individual reports. It's all about lots of data. I'll post some more examples soon.

April 4 - 6, 1943
INDIA: The paradrops land and the Allies are back on Ceylon! We also picked up Male with about 30 Jakes there, so that was obviously unexpected. He'll probably have to buy that group back. Got a few more planes at Trincomalee, including some mystery A to A combat with Tojos. It must have been there, but in another version of the replay that I didn't watch. Either way, I'll take it.

Now supply and troops, including a Brit brigade and two US ind. regiments are being air-lifted to Ceylon.

Patna turns over to us and at last the NE area looks accessible. Troops from Madras are railing over.

CENT PAC: Some more Navy 4Es are heading in, and I'll keep trying to wear things down here without really using too much stuff.

SW PAC: A strange thing happened at Portland Roads. Three xAKL landed a small fragment unit there, and a turn later it disappeared due to attrition. Huh. No bombardments happened so he still doesn't really know what i have there, which is just one small armor unit and some base forces.

CHINA: Some troops in the center are holding well, and the mountains are slowly crumbling.

OZ: The first Perth DA goes well and tomorrow the base should fall.

I have seen the evaporating troops phenomenon several times. It seems to happen when the amphib TF uses up almost all of its Op points before arriving so it can only land a tiny fragment, which is not enough to create a squad or two. The funny thing is, when the rest of the TF unloads the following turn, the missing troops seem to find their way back into the ranks as there are no losses to TOE beyond those suffered from surf and perf(oration) by defensive fire.

The funny thing is, when the rest of the TF unloads the following turn, the missing troops seem to find their way back into the ranks as there are no losses to TOE beyond those suffered from surf and perf(oration) by defensive fire.

In this case the three xAKL dropped some troops, but they TOTALLY evaporated and no more were landed.

What kind of an op was this?

A mistake? Meant to go somehow to Horn Island and got off track? Not likely.

A scout for a larger force coming soon? Possibly, but what will this accomplish? The base has a level 4 field but is far from anything useful to hit.

Faulty recon, showing less here than there actually is in base? That seems possible, as the armor unit will show up as vehicles, but infantry might not be 'seen' at all, giving the impression the base is undefended and vulnerable.

April 7 - 9, 1943
SUBS: The Gato runs into a TK and misses with two fish, and E Shirataka can't put a hit on it. This initiates an offensive deep into the supply lines of the Empire. No subs working the DEI have DL from air ASW yet.

INDIA: About 45-50 bombers were set to mine Calcutta and Diamond Harbor on the night of the 7th. Most of them didn't make it, but a few did. Still no major effect that I can see, but it at least makes things slow down in the area.

A nearly clear day over Ceylon means Trincomalee finally got a plastering, with over 200 hits on the fields on the 7th.

At Jaffna around 150AV is present and some supply is building. It'll be a week before I can move out to Dambulla with this force, and something may happen at Colombo before that. I need to get search installed at Koggola before anything critical happens.

Two CA give Colombo a good shot, but troop damage is light, so I'm guessing there are some decent forts here.

CENT PAC: Two Navy 4E groups hit Mili for the first time. I'll try to close the fields here and work on supply. Nauru is finally looking short as AA has stopped. He could have also put units on rest, but they would really suffer in bombardments if that is the case. Nearly ready to continue the assault here after months of sitting around.

SO PAC: Georges again have their way with CAP in the Solomon Sea region. About 6 Wildcats lost.

CHINA: The Japanese quickly take the hex near Chikhiang after several attacks wipe the remnants of the Chinese supply. Heavy losses for the retreating units. They'll move to the deep West and aim for Urumchi and Kashgar is possible. It'll take 3-4 monte to get there.

OZ: Perth is Allied again! The units there all retreat which is nice. I'll pin them in whatever hex they want to end up in, preferably inland, as they are trying to move now. Once the fighting units Banzai themselves out, the rest will very slowly wither. This will at least keep some of these units, including the 4th Division (fragment), the 4th Air Division and two big IJAAF base forces from being bought out and reused. Since the division fragment is here the rest of that unit can't upgrade either, which is nice. Air Divisions are precious though for the Japanese, and if I can keep this out of play fr a while that is a big plus.

SIGINT: The 4th Guards Division was lately of Calcutta. Is this a general pullout? Are they moving from Cox's to Ramree, maybe beyond? May not know until later.

I had also wondered if Diego would be abandoned, but if so, not yet, or not everything. This is a big valuable base force there.

Well, you are getting him out of India and Perth. There is something to be said for him delaying you and he has done a pretty good job of tying you up. However, I am not sure that it has gotten him much. Once you run him out of India, the Allies are pretty much where they would be in mid 43 anyways. They (Allies) really cannot start major offensive operations until the mid 43 reinforcement come on board anyways. He has burned a lot of supply and helped you train up your Indian army for when the counter offensive starts. This plus the position you hold in the Pacific make me wonder if it was worth the effort. China is a mess but vs any competent Japanese player China is going to be a mess.

It has always been my contention that no matter where the action is, the only real goal for the Allies in 1942 is to "not" lose their carriers. If they do that, then Japan has a problem come 1944.

Would you be so kind as to list yours and GJ's ship losses to date? Warships that is.

Actually, that's a pretty good point - since Obvert has done an excellent job moving things around in the Pacific, he's got some good bases to move from, once the Fleet carriers really start coming online.

I agree. At first I was mad I didn't get to the divisions at Madras and Ceylon to trap or really wear them down. After some reflection I realized that a retreat achieved simply through air strength is ideal and means I didn't have to dig a further hole in my commonwealth pools. Due to the loss of industry at Calcutta the India trip could be costly to the Japanese. There was still enough to support some operations made there at Madras and Jamshedpur, but probably not enough, and the oil at Ledo is basically less than what he could have had at Sian and Lanchow if he'd used some of those troops up there.

Nick has played the whole thing really well, but bad luck and hopefully some of the pressure I've been trying to put on his forces has at least taken a toll of supplies.

If I can get to Ledo sometime soon I'll feel a lot better about the whole thing.

Ship lists coming up.

Allied Ship Losses
A few big battles in the early stages around the DEI cost me a lot of older CL and I used the USN forces aggressively during the early stages, maybe not so judiciously.

As it is the old DDs are scarce now, but I probably won't miss the old CLs much. I've had a hard time figuring out what to do with the ones I have left.

Soon the Allies will be awash in waves of DDs and other escorts, so these losses won't be felt for long. The only thing I'm kicking myself for is the loss of Cornwall recently, just due to a mistake, but it taught me that not all CA are equal. The treaty classes everywhere suffered from poor armor and other compromises. Losing the ship to 5 x 100kg bombs was hard to take, still.

In 14 months I count 27 DDs lost.

The Japanese have lost few ships, as we've both been fairly conservative with the navies after the beginning stages.

It's good to have those two CA off the board early. I haven't hit a lot of DDs yet, though.

Take heart:

Those were not just any 100 kg bombs, but SAP ones. [:)] Less effect, but roughly 50% greater penetration than a stock gp bomb.
