RE: Mar 25th: Decisions.. decisions

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

OK, decision time, my Catalinas on Colombo spotted 2 TFs:

- 7 ships at 27,52: CVE CVE CVE CVE CVE fighters 38 bombers 9 auxiliary 9
- 6 ships at 29,52: DD

- there is a 3rd TF of smaller craft to the east... these likely minesweepers, I won't worry about them as I have seen them for a long time

Image

The carrier TF likely includes some CVLs/ CVEs, 7 ships means a couple CVLs/ CVEs + 2 or 3 cruisers, maybe BBs + 3/ 4 DDs
The DD TF is likely 1 CL + 6 DDs

I plan to send all my Colombo ships to try to catch the CVEs... full speed, hit at night.. I am fully aware of the consequences if they don't catch the carriers
or even worst, if the real KB is behind... I have a very good chance of losing a lot of ships.. but the temptation to try to kill some light carrier is too great

thoughts??

My forces at Colombo are:

Battleships: Revenge and Royal Sovereign (both old R class)
Heavy Cruisers: Dorsetshire
Light Cruisers: Hobart, Enterprise, Emerald, Glasgow
Destroyers: Steward, Pilsbury, Nestor, Napier, Nizam, Norman, Decoy, Encounter, Forture, Tjerk Hiddes, Griffin, Hotspur, Isis, DE Starling
Submarines: KIX, Sealion, O20, KVVII

Vampire and Vendetta, are too low on fuel, so they won't be part of this operation. Colombo run out of fuel many turns ago, and because I was expecting it to fall quickly I didn't attempt to refuel.
Now I have 2 xAKs already loaded with some fuel at Cochin, they will move full speed to Colombo, and I will actually be very happy if some bombers try to hit them instead of my fleet

I plan to build 2 TFs; both with handpicked aggressive commanders

- Battleship force: 2 BB, 1 FP carrying CL + DDs (notice no FP on R class)
- Cruiser force: Dorsetshire, 3 CLs + DDs
- Submarines will interdict in individual TFs

- Vampire and Vendetta will go NE to do ASW patrol and refuel at Trivandrum.

Worst case scenario is KB coming behind, or in other words, the use of CVE/ CVLs as bait to trap the bulk of the British fleet

Another bad scenario is failure to hit the carriers at night, and then strikes at daytime sinking or damaging many ships

The best possible scenario is that this all operation was done in desperation to save the Imperial guards, so he is just expecting me to hide away. Instead my fleets somehow avoid the escorting cruiser/ DD TF and hit the carriers hard.

EDIT: Turn sent; even if this is a bait and the KB is waiting behind; I still want to try to catch those CVEs; all my Colombo ships are kind of disposable and/ or scheduled to withdraw anyway... of course VP lost are a concern, but I doubt he will get auto victory

RE: Mar 23rd: Bataan and Trincomalee holds!

Trincomalee was naval bombed and then assaulted. The assault failed. Moreover, these cruisers will need to leave to rearm, while I can bomb and rearm at Colombo day after day.

Eventually he will get Trincomalee; but every day that holds count. Notice CL Sendai on fire and 2nd Division fatigued!!!
the "reinforcements" from Colombo will likely be as fatigued and disrupted after so many naval bombings!

Which wonderful map and other screens are you using? I have seen the map before, but don't recall the name of it. Topo maybe? I like the other screens in this post better than stock.

Thank you.

I do use Halsey's art - a must IMO, and I use the WIF style map. This map just looks gorgeous, though.

Was looking at that today. Thank you both for the information.

Can I add the extended map to an ongoing game, or will that mess it up?

Sorry to hijack your AAR.

If your game is already DBB extended map, then changing the "art" of the map won't be a problem
same if it is a stock map; changing art but still stock map

Mar26: nothing worked as expected

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

So I got the turn, and it was a big disapointment; nothing went as planned. I was hoping for a cataclysmic night surface action followed by torpedo bombers swarming my battleships; instead I got one Japanese DMS sunk

Battleships didn't find anything,
Cruisers, what a bunch of dumb f-ers, they reacted to the irrelevant minesweeping TF, while carriers and destroyers vanished; so tomorrow they might end paying heavily [8|]

Night Time Surface Combat, near Trincomalee at 32,48, Range 11,000 Yards

Japanese Ships
DMS W-5, Shell hits 6, Torpedo hits 2, and is sunk

Allied Ships
CA Dorsetshire
CL Hobart
CL Enterprise
CL Emerald
DD Nestor
DD Napier
DD Nizam
DD Norman
DD Tjerk Hiddes
DD Hotspur
DD Isis

Maximum visibility in Partly Cloudy Conditions and 67% moonlight: 11,000 yards
Range closes to 17,000 yards...
Range closes to 11,000 yards...
CONTACT: Japanese lookouts spot Allied task force at 11,000 yards
CONTACT: Allied lookouts spot Japanese task force at 11,000 yards
Annesley, J.C. crosses the 'T'
DD Hotspur engages DMS W-5 at 11,000 yards
DD Nestor engages DMS W-5 at 11,000 yards
Range closes to 5,000 yards
DD Isis engages DMS W-5 at 5,000 yards
Range closes to 4,000 yards
DMS W-5 sunk by CA Dorsetshire at 4,000 yards
Combat ends with last Japanese ship sunk...

Plan for tomorrow is to go back to bombing; this is critically important for Trincomalee as it is very close to falling; then refuel at Madras for a very dangerous return to Cochin

Chemkid's have options for both stock and extended maps downloads

More turn highlights:

- Multiple Allied submarine attacks, but no results; many misses, one hit-no-explosion

- CAP trap worked over benares; 10 Sallys + 7 Oscars arrived; but somehow the Hurricanes passed through. Results: 8 Sallys and 1 Hurricane shot down

- Tarakan survived its first assault !!! moreover, he brought way too few troops and therefore got a very poor 1-to-6 result. So no risk yet, moreover, he keeps bombing it [:D] thus damaging his own port and fuel!

- As mentioned before, Trincomalee is almost done; he got 2-to-1 results. It should fall tomorrow, unless somehow my naval bombing disrupts his attack. Fingers crossed. The fall of Trincomalee will signal the beginning of the end for Ceylon, as the fleet will have to withdraw under LBA pressure

Mar27: Mini KB over Colombo

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Mar 27th:
lets start with a quick highlight:

- again multiple submarine attempts, all failed; this turn I got CVE Taiyo on the Malacca strait and a big tanker close to Miri, but as always "Hit but no explosion".
Dutch submarines got an xAK near Calcutta, but "missed" [:@] [:@]

- A second invasion landed on Tarakan, so it should fall soon

- Trincomalee naval bombing worked fine, as he failed to captured it [:)] this time he got 1-to-2 and fort remains at level 1.

- Usual bombings in China, Bataan, Bandoeng.

- I kept bombing the 48th division withdrawing from Bezwada

RE: Mar27: Mini KB over Colombo

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Now the main event of the day; Mini KB attacked the Battleships at Colombo.

I am surprised he chose the longest range, maybe he thought I would pursuit, maybe he was worried about my Colombo torpedo bombers.

Anyway, regardless of the reason, it is fair to say those 2 additional hexes of extended range saved the British fleet, as the Kates scored repeatedly against the battleships but all hits just bounced

This started with an intense 1st phase air battle, in which 24 escorting Zeros fought very well against 16 Hurricanes and 15 Fulmars. I counted 10 Zeros shot down + 4 operation losses, while I confirmed the loss of 7 Hurricanes and 6 Fulmars in total (5 from operation losses)
In the 1st phase only 2 Kates were shot down; and afterwards they were very accurate in bombing BBs Royal Sovereign and Revenge. He scored 10 hits on the former and 1 on the later. As already mentioned, I was lucky he didn't bring torpedoes,

Then in the last phase (after bombing), another 3 Kates went down.. I guess overall I won the day

RE: Mar27: Mini KB over Colombo

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Tomorrow I will attempt a CAP trap over Colombo, 4 destroyers will remain in a SAC TF; the rest just disbanded.

Minesweepers close to Trincomalee means he will bomb it either next turn or the turn after. I expect heavy bombardment dealt by old, slow battleships
Then Trincomalee will fall.

Cruiser TF on Trincomalee will move to Colombo, Madras would had been safer in the short term, but then they are trapped once Trincomalee falls and LBAs are rebased.

Mini KB is fully committed here; where is the real KB??? 4 turns left before the end of the amphibious bonus and I haven't seen any indication of offensives in the Pacific.

You could move your TBs to Koggala for one turn to get closer to MKB and miss his sweeps over Columbo. There may be no support there, but damaged planes can rail it back to Columbo.

Problem is, Koggala was never built up; it is still airbase level 1 meaning no offensive operations allowed. I have done CAP traps on level 1 airbases, in the exact way you mentioned, the last one was on Benares. I also do it with the very short ranged recon planes: rebase close to the enemy, recon for some turns or until all planes are damaged, then rebase to a well supported base for repairs, then repeat. but won't work for strikes

Also, he didn't sweep, he just got a naval strike. I don't think he was plannning to fight Colombo's CAP, he might have tried to hit the Cruisers that killed his DMS. Those eleven 250kg bombs that did little against the battleships would had meant a lot of damage against my cruiser/ DD TF. I would say at least 2 or 3 ships sunk + many crippled.

Next turn he might send a sweep, but low probability; he already lost 14 Zeros, and he will still need to prioritize CAP and escort, leaving few, if any plane available for sweep against 17 Hurricanes and 15 Fulmars "ready" plus another 20 getting repaired.

Mar 30 to 31: Trinco/ Tarakan lost, PM bombed

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Last 3 turns were not too exciting, and I didn't have a lot of time to update; so what has happened??

- Trincomalee was lost on Mar 30, he did a naval bombing, followed by a succesful deliberate attack
The British fleet already left, intact. they will repair at Bombay; in a turn or two Ceylon will be ready for LBAs, so better to stay far away

- Tarakan was finally recaptured; it was very fun to keep it for 4 turns [:D]

- Port Moresby got one of the worst naval bombings of the war:

I will try to avenge Port Moresby:

Image

Last turn I spotted the Japanese near Milne, and I knew he was coming to bombard: thus I sent 3 TFs to be ready to ambush

they will now try to intercept; I should have some advantage as the Japanese should be low on ammo. Even lower if he decided to bomb again.

I will also send 3 Battleships, I don't think they can engage, but might come handy if this takes more than one day

Fingers crossed the KB is not close [X(] otherwise this will be end badly

If everything go as planned:
- Doorman's Anglo-Dutch TF will arrive first and will be badly beaten, but will damage the Japanese
- Friedell's USN-Australian TF (Nashville, Australia, Canberra) will come second and defeat the Japanese, now out of ammo and severely damaged
- English's USN TF (Raleigh, Detroit) will finish off badly damaged enemy

We haven't have a good naval fight in a long time, and the temptation to sink a couple cruisers is too great.

It will be fun to watch either or [;)]

Besides I think the KB is near Guadalcanal. I have seen some xAKs close to Tulagi, but no escorts... looks like perfect bait to me
