Semi OT: "Fury" (2014) movie...

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

I enjoyed it. Good movie with a mix of realism and Hollywood, more Hollywood then realism. I don't go to movies looking for realism.

When I showed my Grandfather Kelly's Hero's in the early 80's, he thought despite its comedic nature it had more truth then fiction, and he served the Regina Rifles in Europe.

I still think Iron Cross was the best WWII movie to date [:)]

`Whether the best or not, I think, it describes the character and mood of war in some aspect not so bad.
And probably better in comparison to the mentioned new movies...

If someone has access to Guy Sayer, "The forgotten soldier", I would recommend that, too.
It is not totally clear, how much fiction and how much reality is in this book, but I was impressed, when I consumed it, long ago.

Don't forget "Stalingrad" (the German one), that many also consider the best WW2 movie, along with "Iron Cross" and "The forgotten soldier".It is interesting that all those movies are antiwar movies.

No one has mentioned 'Come and See', imho one of the very best ever, on part with "Im Westen nichts Neues"

problem: you did not want to play Axis any longer

But here we have the problem of war games ...

Why should I "play" the soviet side in WITE, knowing, that Stalin was a bloddy dictator of the same category and magnitude, as his german counterpart...

Force 10 from Navarone, for its historical realism of Barbara Bach.

I thought as war movies go it wasn't that bad (with caveat below). The camerawork and sound did a good job of making you feel "there" and most of the battle scenes were not comically ridiculous unlike so many...but...

The last battle just really took it down for me - you could nitpick on stuff here and there in earlier fights but the arcade style shoot 'em up with intermittent discussions inside the tank apparently not shooting back, while all the while hundreds of Germans just run back and forth in front of a Sherman was just too much.

Still...I was glad I saw it. Agreed with some of the above posters on the quality of Das Boot.

Within the first minute of the movie I saw Brad Pitt jump off a tank and kill a German officer on a horse, at that point I decided suspending disbelief for the remainder of the movie would be a good idea.
