NE Australia - Any plans to build up Cooktown and Portland Roads area??

Portland Roads is on the way at a level 5 field. Coen has a level 2 field. Cooktown is slowly building, now at level 3, but Port Moresby is not a bastion for the Japanese, with only about 4 units and 6k troops. I have two divisions prepped for it but I'll land only one first and see how that goes.

Before that though I'll take Oro Bay and Buna to have forward air support and search. They're lightly held and troops are staging now around Milne Bay. From Mornington Island and by fast transport from Portland Roads I'd like to quickly get some boots on the ground in the Islands off the West tip of the Gulf of Carptenteria, at Grote Eylandt, Gove and Wessel Island. If I take all three I can only support one from Mornington Island, but one is enough if it takes hold.

SW PAC HQ is now at Milne Bay and will support moves in the area (prepped for Port Moresby) and up the coast of New Guinea.

I'm at 21k right now, which is about as high as it's been. Drop tanks become periodically available if I reduce troop numbers so I could move some big Corps one hex next door and see if that helps, then fly them out. Of course Nick has to show his hand and go for the base with sweeps followed by bombing runs as well, and that may or may not go well for us.

Wish I had some radar there! Two zombie base forces are upgraded but won't take replacements, yet.

Next turn a tank brigade should cross into Calcutta! What a long time it's been since that city saw an Allied force nearby. Lots of units are ready to rail in and tanks will continue to fill space as we can.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SW PAC: [/font] Hellcats swept catching Oscars and Rufe's at LR CAP altitudes protecting shipping. Lots of kills! B-17s sortied to go after the amphibs and were harassed by some old A5M2s which they shot up pretty badly for no losses, but no hits on the ships either.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font] After 106 IJAAF 2E hit Chungking on the 21st and supply drops by 700-800 from using the flak guns and airfield hits (even with heavy rain), I decide now or never. I move two 25 plane groups of P-40k into Chungking and another two into Paoshan. The Paoshan groups are set low, but he's been bombing at 15k at Chungking so I put them right on that mark.

It works like a charm. About half the bombers get through to put negligible damage on the fields, but 55 are reported shot down on the day! [8D]

At Paoshan thunderstorms and poor detection mean the Lilys get through unscathed. I'll transfer all of these that will fly to Chungking and see what he decides to do now.

Here is what we face next. He's digging in around the approaches to Burma, but with the amount of stuff I can now bring I'm not sure it's going to be enough. He also doesn't have very big fields here and with Corsairs, P-38s plus the addition of the new Hellcats, I'm not sure 200 fighters will be enough to hold at Dimapur.

My plan will be to try a move down the yellow road to get around Dimapur with several tank brigades and get more info about rear positions. If I can drop some of the big Chindits on some base back there that could really put a wrench in the forward defenses. I doubt he'll leave them without good protection though.

I'll be taking Darjeeling in the next two turns as well as Rangpur. I'll get fields going there quickly and only once I have them established enough to do something about it will I recon Jorhat, Imphal and Kalemyo. I'll be going for Tezpur as soon as AA units are railed in. Once Tezpur is captured and builds a field I'll start tanks toward the yellow road.

Nick is a good planner, and I don't think he'll get himself caught forward here, but these moves might force him to simply pull back without a fight, which at this point is a great option for the Allies.

In PDU-off Hellcats might just have the quality they had in reality. These guys faced Oscars and Rufe's and absolutely had their way, and so far only the Georges have gotten even kills against them. It helps that I'm using the Wasp's group, full of pretty experienced pilots. At 130 a month and without any major CV ops planned soon, these guys will continue to operate on land and pick up kills where they can.

I definitely like it, just because it's different and I get to think differently about the process of the game and the conflict. I love PDU-off and trying to make do with obsolete planes through 42-43, knowing the monsters like the Jug are just around the corner. I like knowing that I can take risks with small stuff and don't have to be precious about fuel or supply.

It's more difficult to have to plan so deeply, but this is helping me stay organized. I could have been a bit better at second tier defensive planning in my long game there, and I think now I would be having played that game and this one.

We haven't had a carrier battle yet. That is something that terrifies me because I know what it can do, but I also know it's getting to that time when I don't have to be too concerned anymore about trading CVs, and the Hellcat and Helldiver will both be on board with the thousands of Bofors recently added to the fleet. I think in DBB I'll enjoy the late war flak the Allies will have.

Things are turning, but a lot of that is Nick's choice to allow the turn, not hold for dear life to various areas. That may be a smart decision to save his resources and units, but it's also giving me some opportunities.

Chungking will likely be a tough nut, and the recent addition of some air defense (100 P-40K) will mean he has to employ a more rounded air force here to sweep them away before returning to his bombing campaign. That could mean week's delay, but if my guys do well it could be more.

I can't really go any faster in India than I'm going now. I'm not worried about losing the Central part of China, and he would still have to fight into the Sian and Lanchow region if he wants to fully nullify the Chinese. It's good terrain up there.

The longer the Japanese are using 300-400 bombers a day in China (which have been going for over a year now, daily), and using the Armies to bombard and attack, the better we'll fare later elsewhere. There is no spare stuff in the Japanese economy, so the supply and fuel and HI to do what he's doing can't be used later. Even in my game where I had virtually no supply left in 45 against Jocke I stopped in late 42 in China after our ceasefire and concentrated on defense in other areas, and that was a stock scen 1 game where I got more supply from refineries.

I've just on my current turn flown some Hellcats and Corsairs into Paoshan to see if I can hold it long enough to fly supply in there. If I stop the Japanese from closing the mountains long enough to begin to push in NE India this could turn into their Afganistan. We'll see what he commits now. He's been flying 40 zeros sweeping for two days but I have a feeling he'll throw the kitchen sink for the next turn and try to close Paoshan. And he might do it. It's only a level two with little supply left. If he doesn't, it could be bad. I have 100 planes flying supply in now, and the field is nearly fixed. The long stuck Burma division (now an Indian division) plus an AA unit, two RAF base forces with radar and the China Air Task Force are there.

Good idea. It has been near Ceylon offering help for a battle at Colombo. It's already railing over but prepping for Dimapur. I'l think about priorities and whether I should reassign it. It all depends on the air battles and if I can keep some supply around. If not, then there's no reason to prep for Paoshan as there will be no point. Also though, if I win at Dimapur quickly I could add a lot of support through the air to the mountains.

I ship lots of supply into India even though (without having lost industry in Calcutta) it is self sufficient (at least with fuel from Abadan). And it isn't just what Allied forces need to fight. It's the abundance that they need on hand to variously upgrade, recover, rebuild shattered units and so on at a sufficient rate.

It's the abundance that they need on hand to variously upgrade, recover, rebuild shattered units and so on at a sufficient rate.

I do have Calcutta now, but obviously it's not producing anything. I also ship supply through Cape Town, and can get a LOT here quickly if needed. I've got plenty in India now and should be able to support any new ops from the 500k reserves in Karachi.

The India HQ is heading for Calcutta, and I lied, it's prepping for Ledo along with four divisions. I'll put four other divisions to work at Dimapur, then try the route around.

I'll say more about Paoshan soon as I update. Interesting up there.

Agree. The two things the Allies get in spades is supply and the ships to move it around. So why not pump India and every base you can possibly think of with supply? You will never run short of supply or AKs for that matter.

At Mili BBs bombarded the base and hit only troops, not the fields, as 40 zeros jumped the bombing run, but this time there is enough protection that the bombers get through the first wave at least and take out a few on the way.

He also may have to rebuild some bomber groups for a few days and move fighters, possibly even more AS, to deal with the new situation. Chungking on the other hand has decent supply, (16.5k after filling up some newly arrived zombie units and moving them out) and plenty of AS, plus a surprisingly effective set of flak guns. Now, if I can get the radar units installed ...

Nick flies a single 12 plane Tojo IIc sweep on the 23rd. The P-40K groups overwhelm them with quality pilots and quantity of planes in the air and shoot down 9 without a loss. [X(]

I think Nick only has two Tojo IIc groups, but also has some IIb and IIa groups around. Not sure if they are still in the area, though, after they left India. He flew a 40 plane A6M5 sweep over Paoshan for two days in a row, hitting nothing as the P-40s there (9 of them) are not repairing due to low supply. I'm flying in Hellcats and Corsairs now. The fields are mending and the base is taking supply that being flown in. The (former) Burma Division is moving in. I'll do my damndest to get that division to take replacements and upgrade. If it does the tanks on their way will get a surprise. [:)]

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] An RO sub hits an LSI with one fish and it sinks during the turn. The only loss so far in the Ceylon invasion, but a big one.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]INDIA: [/font] Troops will DA at Dambulla tomorrow. In the NE we've got AA and base forces plus engineers into forward areas and now will ramp up movements. I've got three para-units moving in and those will take the next bases very near the Japanese lines and more AA will rail in.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CENT PAC: [/font] A little nudge from the Navy sends the Nauru garrison farther to the edge and they banzai charge to finish things off on the 25th. All Japanese units are wiped out!

Now we can concentrate on Mili which has about 7k troops including the fortress (which has been reduced somewhat by bombardments). Daily sweeps and airfield strikes will hit the base now. I've got troops prepped for Maleolap and Jaluit and might do all at once there, even though two of the three have no fields. At this point I think he's not going to spend a lot of resources in Cent Pac.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SW PAC: [/font] Landings at Buna and Oro Bay are moving in.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font] The Japanese push toward Chungking along the road to the SE is accompanied now by an actual move into the Chungking base. About 12 units moving in from two hex sides. I think this may stop HI production which will significantly reduce our supply generation. The base is moving back toward 20k (at 19.2k today) and has level 6 first with 3400AV in it now. Most of these troops are battle hardened and experienced, but rested. We have 100 P-40K ready for what comes.

You'll run HI and LI as long as input stockpiles in the base last. If you have open hex sides you can still flow in inputs. In-base production of any Resources or Oil stop. Chungking in stock gets 420/day supply I believe. Not sure in yours.

I found a HUGE difference in defense there between Level 6 and Level 7 Forts. I'm still holding out in March 1943 with Level 5 because I started with Level 7. He has 200-ish plane bombing missions daily for almost a year now, and daily bombardments. I lose 300-400 men a day, mostly disabled, but have survived about 8-10 ground attacks. He has a very large stack invested in Chungking. The resurrection rule is your friend.

IMO trying to CAP this base is a bad investment in limited supply. He can trash the runways pretty easily if he wants and then it's the VPs and the planes gone. I'd build Forts, even if he's already in the hex.
