Question about construction units

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Question about construction units

Post by xwraith »

I'm learning the game, and I can't quite figure out how to use construction units. I've been perusing the manual and while it correctly points out that these units are attached to HQs, I can't figure out how to tell them to go to a specific hex. I've had some luck deploying them out of the 15th army group, but it seems that the game picks where they are deployed.

Thanks!

Its automatic and beyond the players control. Except the Rail groups.

Use priority repairs in the city screen to influence where they go.

They seem to prioritize rail repair before anything else though. Had a lot of problems getting ports repaired.

in cities ive been prioritizing the manpower repair along with what else i want repair. thinking that a increase in manpower will boost the other repairs. just checked my port in Naples, this seems to have made a difference.

i will also put a depot and a HQ/unit in the city sometimes.

Remember you do get some player controlled rail engineers that can rapidly fix the rail net. (as the allies anyways). I played a few games before I started to wonder what these units were sitting in England/Africa and then realized they were the same as the ones in WiTE.

I've attached them to Army HQs and have had a lot of success with that. They seem to go to work right away in the HQ's sector. Sicily, for example, when they are attached to 7th Army. Many of them went to work right away. Palermo, Siracusa and Messina were fully functional in a short time.

Any idea how you get them to build\upgrade airfields? Should I attach a construction battalion to one of the air forces? I thought I read that they can't take attachments though.....

Since the last patch, I've found the automatic airfield building/upgrading (as the Allied commander) to be pretty rapid. Just keep supplies coming to the area in sufficient numbers.

Attach them to higher level HQ's (army groups or above) - they will deploy over a wider area of the map.

The construction unit to upgrade will be assigned automatically from any HQ in range. Sometimes though airfields will upgrade without a construction unit physically showing up on the hex.

Do I need to worry about the RR units getting displaced; i.e. do they suffer any significant loss when they are displaced by an enemy ZOC?

I assume there are some losses but the ones you see on the map have generally finished there repairs. If you think they are at risk you can click on them and send them back to their HQ so they don't get displaced.

Has anyone else noticed that the RRV in the rail groups can go to 0 during movement? I can hit the redo button and the RRV returns to 3, but when I try to move it- say into the 5th hex it goes to 0 each time - there are still MPs left. Not sure I understand how moving a rail group can destroy the RRV. Next turn it can move just fine without RRV loss. Maybe alien abduction? Roswell, Holland???

interdiction and/or fatigue, I have seen it happen to my rail guys several times.

Can anyone tell me how to get rail groups to repair stuff? They seem to sit around in Sicily, and the manual doesn't tell me how to use them.

You have to use them manually.

Move them by land or see like any other unit untill they sit on an unrepaired rail hex (they appear in red when you select a rail group). You'll see the RRC text becoming active on the unit panel. Click it to order a rail repair in the hex (it will cost you MP). Continue in other hexes as long as you have MP's left.

One way to manipulate them somewhat: If you attach them to an HQ, they will only be assigned to a task within range of that HQ, and generally closer first....this is the way it worked in WITE, and I suspect the same here

That means if can attach them to a Corps, in an area you want lots of repair, and they will only be sent out by that Corps within range. This will focus a bit where they go, even if there is still randomness

Pretty sure it works out this way
